The "wrench"

08 450

So I drove home from a jobsite tonight about 150 miles pulling a trailer , truck ran like a top.

The last couple of miles to home is uphill , the wrench symbol came on my dash and I lost power but made it home.

I shut truck off and had a look under the hood but didn't see anything , started it back up and the wrench was gone?

So what kinds of issues can the wrench light be pointing out?

Wonder what coolant temp and tranny temps were? Could have been in a reduced power mode because it was in danger of an over heat?

Was your clutch fan engaging? Did you hear the airplane under the hood?

Clutch fan was going but i thought it was making more noise than usual
But i chalked it up to it working harder because of limp mode.

So I took it for a short drive this morning and everything was Ok for a bit then the wrench and the check engine light came on.
I looked in the manual and they said the wrench has to do with tranny , I checked tranny oil and it is low, going to buy some now.

the wrench is a powertrain fault. Not necessary that it is the tranny.

Could be sometimes. Read the codes is the next step.

Be sure to check all your fluids though.

Got it scanned and it said the transmission had been hot.
Topped up the oil and cleared the codes.

Drove 2 miles and everything came back

Now they are saying its the sensor inside the pan or the wiring inside the tranny pan?

Didn't move at all and it shouldn't have got hot in 2 miles or less?
I took it to a transmission guy so Ill see what he says tomorrow.

Tranny will take 230F for several minutes so I cannot imagine you getting near that or exceeding..so a bad sensor would seem right.

So I dodged the transmission problems but now Im getting lots of black smoke out the tailpipe when I step on it to pass etc.

Was talking to a guy and he said it sounded like Im about to have turbo problems?
Any thoughts appreciated.

If you are getting laggy acceleration, it means that the computer isn't seeing the boost, or maybe there isn't boost.
Because you said there is black smoke, that probably means the boost isn't there to burn up the fuel.

So either the turbo isn't running right, or there is a problem with air flowing. Air filter good? What are you seeing for turbo PSI while driving?
If the PSI looks good, chances are it's an issue with too much EGR running into the intake, eliminating usable fresh air.
