Well music was the key to the army Rick. Back then drums and fifes could be heard over musket fire. So commands were issued by drums and fife. They were used to wake you up, tell you when to eat, go to your assigned duties for the day, when to end the work day. Also used to keep you in step during marching. And when on the battlefield they were used to tell you when to prime and load as well as make ready, present, British way or take aim american way) and when to fire. Also when to fix bayonets, charge bayonets etc.

The Continental Army used musicians as well Rick. As did most militia units. Easier for training and during the battles.
