The 3.5L eco for a 4x4 has a combined EPA of 17 mpg. A 700lb weight reduction and small 2.7L mill should put the combined at 21-22. With a tow rating of 8500lbs, not to shabby.

I wasn't aware that the tow ratings had been released. Did I overlook a post or a link?

Anyway, the ecodiesel will max out at around 9K plus and has already proven itself as a fuel sipper. With the Ram diesel having better MPG's and a possible tow rating advantage, the only thing going for the 2.7L is buy in cost and overall maintenance costs.

There are pros and cons on both sides of this coin, I just hope that Ford's stubbornness about a small diesel doesn't hurt them.

Tim, I think the full ratings have not yet been released, but one of the twitter links did show that the 2.7TT was rated "up to" 8500 lbs.

I read 8500lb somewhere, seventy-seven has added some clarity. I also read 2200lbs payload or that number sticks in my mind. If ford had redesigned the 3.5L to be an iron block, dual timing chains, etc...I would be real interested in it but as it stands, the 2.7 looks pretty nice. I think I could live with 8500lbs or 8000lbs but not much less.

Port fuel injectors along with the direct injectors would be a nice addition to the family. Several companies now use one or more port injectors to keep gunk at bay in direct injected engines.

I'm curious if that 8500lb number is off a regular hitch now or if it still requires a weight distributing hitch. Past F150's have been limited to 5000lbs across the board if you use a regular weight carrying receiver hitch instead of a weight distributing setup.

Tim lets not forget that the ecodiesel wasn't built to compete per say against the 2.7 and vice versa. However it was built to compete against the 3.5 ecoboost. And although it may get better unloaded fuel mileage I really don't think it gets any better when towing.

Not that I put much faith in the biased idiots at FTL Truck. But they did a video of the ecodiesel towing up the Ike Gauntlet. The truck did 3mpg. the grade and a little worse then the 3.5 ecoboost. Now some will comment on the fact that the ram was much closer to its max tow rating then the ford, but lets not forget that the ford also didn't have the maxtow package. And that when comparing these two engines side by side the 3.5 runs away from the ecodiesel with overall capability. And the 2.7 is much closer but slightly under the capabilities of the ecodiesel.

For the j2807 tow ratings on the GM 5.3. According to this their rating actually dropped.

As will virtually all the automakers when complying with the SAE regulations.
I for one, am happy to see this.

While we're going off topic, I can't wait to see the full Towing specs for the entire lineup. Be interesting to see how the SAE J2807 figures differ at the very top end.
I see on Ford Fleet they have a preliminary 2015 guide out, with a note that the final version will be published in September 2014.

I'm not likely to buy the 2.7L engine, the 3.5 EcoBoost is just so good, and I can afford the fuel.

Not necessarily, Ford claims to have been using these same tests for several years. And from what I've read it seems as though the Rams are about the same if not the same ratings. I just find it funny that last year when GM debuted the new 5.3 they claimed that it would beat the ecboost on towing and mpg's. They also claimed that their 6.2 would beat Ford's 6.2 with the same and had best in class 12,000lb towing.

Is it? I don't know, doesn't seem to be a big deal to me.
