Cam recommendations on 390

My rig is a 75 ford f100 had the 360 which is being took out and rebuilt and converted to the 390. I'm swapping the old intake for the edelbrock performer and the carb for a holley 750. Money allowing headers soon .. Got 3:50 gears and 33x12.50x15 m/t . I use my truck for everything from huntin to hittin mud holes to just crusin to haulin scrap or whatever I need it for. I would like a good soundin cam but really I want one that's gonna work best with my setup.. Also it's a 4speed with the granny gear . Any help would be appreciated

First off, welcome to FTE.
If I may be so bold, check this thread out.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nd-did-it.html
I've gone through what you are now.
We are using our trucks for the same thing.
If you don't want to see all the early stuff you can skip a bunch of pages in and get to the motor stuff.

I have a 750 on mine, however I do have a few more cubes than you're planning (441).
Mr. Redneck, will you do us old farts a favor and use punctuation and real sentences on the forum. I know that many guys answer on their phone but if you need help or a recommendation it is much easier to figure out what you want if we can ALL understand it. Thank you for that.
I gave you my thread address so that you could read through it and maybe get some ideas of what to, or not do.
Also a good tool to use is the search tool located on the dent title page.
Hope all goes well.

Sure thing turbohunter. I type how I talk, but I'll try to punctuate as best as I can. So do you agree that a 750cfm is to much?

Right off the bat without knowing anything about your build it might be.
But you should get your parts list and engine specs together then run the numbers in one of the many online calculators. That will get you in the ballpark which is prolly a 650.
I have found these calculators to be a bit low for my taste.
I'll give you a short story.
When I had my engine on the dyno it ran better on an 800 cfm carb.
But the calculators had it at about 700/720ish.
Of course the dyno is not the street so you have to take that into consideration.
Drivability and mileage count in the real world.
Hope this helps.

Here's my two cents: a stock 390 at 6000rpm will use around 550cfm, whereas a mildly-built 390 at 6000rpm will use around 640cfm. A simple 4bbl Edelbrock 1406 600cfm would be perfect.
Try going here or here or search CFM Calculator on google and there're a bunch of online calculators that will give you an approximate CFM your engine could use.

Ps, the items in blue and underlined are clickable hyperlinks to my references.

I just put a Comp 268 in my 390 and love it. Mild lope, great performance, awesome sounding, and like ***** said, it still holds a good vacuum.

Ok
That's certainly a good rv type torque cam.
A vac secondary 750 is what I have with a few more cubes, so you'll have to do a bit of tuning on it.
I'm sure you may get some push back on going with the bigger carb, but it's your truck and you can do whatever feels right to you.
What made your mind up on that?

Well there is only one machine shop around here that everyone uses. My dad took his hodrod motors to him when he was young, so the man has been doin it for awhile. Anyway I called him up this mornin and asked what he thought on the cam and he said the edelbrock since it goes with the intake . But I decided on the carb. What is pushback?
