1996 300 efi Build

Hey guys I am looking for all the info I can get on hopping my 300 efi straight six up.Its a 1996 ford shortbed reg cab 5 speed 4x4 with 300 straight six. Finally have funds rounded up and im gonna pull the engine tonight to get started. I'm not wanting to go crazy just ad a lil more hp/torq gains. And bullet proof the motor even more than it is. The engine is in very good shape with only 101,000 miles. I am going to delete the smog pump sense it is leaking badly and not working properly anyways. I no there is no power gain but I work on my own vehicles and will be nice to not have it in the way. Has anyone done a smog delete on a 1996 300 efi to see how the computer reacts? I am also gonna redo the exhaust system and go with stock efi manifolds 2 high flow cats 2 1/2 inch dual pipes. and dummy 02 sensors. I am doing electric fan conversion, and metal timing gears. Efi friendy cam, springs lifters and a valve job with some port and polish work. I think I would happy with I listed just wondering if anyone has done anything similar with there efi 300 six to see how the computer reacts. Let me no what you guys think. Thanks

"Has anyone done a smog delete on a 1996 300 efi to see how the computer reacts?"

Do all that stuff just to see how the computer reacts? Go ahead and be sure to document the whole process with the results and post them here for all to enjoy.

BTW, there isn't a page on this Forum that doesn't have a posting with problems on EFI trucks because of some ill advised DIY "re-engineering" by removing, deleting, by-passing, plugging, unplugging, etc., and ad infinitum.

300 efi build

Well if we was all scared to try new things and left everything bone stock we would be no where in the performance world. It's also a 18 year old truck. And the smog pump is starting to have its issues. Parts are expensive to rebuild the system like new again. And also the smog has been known to crack 300 heads in cold weather from what I was told by ford mechanics. If your into driving your bone stock vehicles that's fine by me. I like experimenting with my stuff to get the most out of it I can if possible. I enjoy doing it also. Just because things are designed a certain way from factory doesent mean it the best way to do something. Look at early powerstrokes down pipe are you saying its not better to put a 3 inch round down pipe instead of the pancake shaped one? Or adding a intercooler to the old idi turbo diesels? Or a better intake on the old 300's instead of the old log style single barrel carb set up. If it was up to me I would have a cross flow head also if it was practical in the us. I posted the ad because I'm sure I'm not the only one that has tried to hop up a 300 efi and would like to learn from there mistakes. I no the efi set up was not a good design for after market performance and hard to work with. Worst case I just throw a carb set up on it if it don't work I have a 240 head ready to go that has bigger valves, sqrew in studs, and has been port and polished. So either way I will make it work. That's not what I wanna do. I would like to play with the 300 efi to see what can be done with it.

"I'm sure I'm not the only one that has tried to hop up a 300 efi and would like to learn from there mistakes." Yes, and there are many postings on this Forum that question how to increase the performance of the EFI 300...you only need read and take notes.

Their mistakes usually take the form of "ill advised DIY "re-engineering" by removing, deleting, by-passing, plugging, unplugging, etc., and ad infinitum." I repeat myself.

No AIR pump will burn up the cat. With the right resistors you can fool the EEC into thinking everything is hunky dory. Emissions add-ons don't cost any performance so there's no advantage to taking anything off, though. Nothing wrong with clean air.

I think the 1996 trucks have Mass Air Flow EFI vs Speed Density that was on all previous EFI years. MAF responds better to hop ups. Find a way to get more air through the motor, and the your EFI should adjust.
I would keep the air pump, just because dealing with the computer(voodoo) will be a pain in the butt. I just took the remains of my air injection off my 1981 F250 (No Computer), because the air pump was missing and the air manifold was rusted through. If I find a good JY set up, I might try to put it back.
