That is a great trailer! How much do you think that it weighs?

These LED strips were advertised as being suitable for backup lights as well as other applications. I can't get over how many styles of LED lights there are these days. I am using LED strips for taillights on my 56...they are embedded in the stakepockets of the bed.

I took the advertised weights of all of the components that I used and added them up, the total was 1489 lbs. I have yet to put it on the scales but that will be happening this week.

Charlie,
Great job on the trailer. The lights are going to be a great addition, one on the inside of each fender would make the deck glow when loading.

A question for you and Chris is what vendors are you sourcing your lighst from? I know of a couple but I have not seen the two styles you each posted.

I buy my parts from various vendors, many times I am looking for a particular item when I stumble upon other parts that I hadn't thought about. These LED strips were one such ocassion, found them on Ebay when I was looking for clearance lights. Here is the listing, Truck Trailer USA Made Tecniq LED Back Up Tail Reverse White Light 15" Slimline | eBay, check out the other items this vendor sells...lots of interesting stuff.

OK, so I finally got some time to run by the scales this morning. Weighed the trailer with just the wheels on the scale: 1440 lbs. Then I dropped the jack so that the weight was off the trailer ball and weighed it again: 1730 lbs. Yesterday I put a 9000 lb winch, a full-size car battery and a few other items in the tongue box which added about 120 lbs to the tongue weight. Right now there is 290 lbs on the tongue, without the winch/battery/etc that number would be 170 lbs. I guess I got pretty close to the 10% weight.

Charlie, you have a winch on that trailer? I was thinking about wiring a winch from the trailer to the towing vehicle battery. Something like this.... And how did you wire the LED lights on the toolbox?

Here are a couple of pics of the winch, I am still in the process of completing the wiring. The (+) lead has a bank of circuit breakers that are made to mount to the positive lead on the battery but my setup is a bit different. I found these solid nickel battery terminals that are made for audio applications (I think)...at any rate you can slide wire into the various sized holes in the terminal and tighten them down with a set screw. I will have a switch box mounted on the inside wall of the box for the LED deck lights. jrockdiddy...I like to keep a dedicated battery on hand in the trailer for the winch and lighting. Many times it has come in handy for other things like jumping other trucks, etc.
This box sure filled up fast but I think that I will still have room for my chocks and straps.

Looks like great attention to detail. Is the winch remote controlled? Any provision for gas ventilation?

There is a wired remote control for the winch. I assume by gas ventilation that you are talking about the battery...the case cover has lots of gaps to vent the battery and there is quite a bit of space in the opening for the winch cable through the box wall. I had an Optima battery for this trailer but ended up putting it in my truck. Next item on the list is a solar powered trickle charger.

Wow, very nice build! Can you give more info regarding the axles? How do they differ from the leaf spring type? I'd love to build a trailer of my own.
