It will be mostly stock and I save about $60 so I think I'll go with the 1600-1800 converter.

This question is more or less directed at Conanski, or someone with experience trashing a trans. I have a can of trans flush but I'm worried about little aluminum pieces staying in the radiator and getting back to the transmission. Do you think an inline filter like this would work or did you buy a new radiator?

When I did my c-4 in my '71 a friend who ran a trans shop told me to be sure to flush the cooler and lines with kerosene. He said get a cheap drill driven pump from Lowes and some clear tube and connect to one side of cooler and let other line drain into a pan. Run about 1 gal of kerosene thru it or until clean. Then blow out kero with air, should be it.

Thanks for the tip wag53, I'm almost ready to put the valvebody on and button things up finally. I've been taking pictures on the assembly so I'll get those posted once I'm done.

Yup, definitely replace the converter and flush the lines. Not worth killing a new transmission.

I got the trans just about closed up, the pan is on, extension is on, the only problem is I got the pump placed in and I'm short one bolt so I'm waiting on some from my dealership. Then I'll get the TC ordered and get it into the truck.

So what flexplate did you use this time? I'm gonna be swapping my c4 for an aod. But I'm confused on the flexplate issue.

I have a 351C with the 28oz balance. Is the backspacing right on the c4 flexplate or do I need to find a different one?

And was the early c6 flexplate different too? I ask cuz I've got another AOD 351C combo that is together with the original C6 flexplate. Is that gonna cause a problem?

No you can't use a C6 flexplate with an AOD, it will bolt together but it pushes the TC back too far and the pump self destructs the instant the engine is fired for the first time and sends metal shavings throughout the trans. The 351w/AOD combo was used in the mid '80 crown vic so that is what you need to get a flexplate for, the windsor also has a 28oz imbalance.

Thanks a lot, con. That saves me a lot of trouble. I'll find a flexplate from one of those and switch them. I'll also do a comparison and see just how much different they are.

sorry I haven't had any updates lately, unfortunately I took a late night cruise awhile back and rolled mom and dad's daily driver so all my funds went to replacing that. I think I'll be able to get the TC ordered this month though.

I did further research and found out that the Monster torque converter was actually made by Dacco so that is a no go. I did some more looking and found some good reviews on Dirty Dog converters with a stock style replacement that I think I'll order after talking to Allen on Monday.

Converters - Ford - AOD - F-52 Stock AOD converter - DirtyDog Performance (Powered by CubeCart) - AOD Stock replacement

I bought my converter from Dacco. Just a stock unit. Haven't got my AOD back together yet though.

Why are you against daaco. I've used them a number of times in race cars and my trans builder that does a lot for the local drag strip, uses them 2/3 of the time. I never had a problem yet. I have a 540hp 351 with a 4000stall (3000lb 68 mustang), a 360whp 390 with a 26-2800 stall (4100lb 67 mustang) and my only complaint is the 4k is too loose.

I put a Dacco converter behind our 7.3PSD. Triple clutch low stall billet. It works great. And we really can give it a workout sometimes.

Well I understand that things can get blown out of proportion and some people will spam on every post they find, but I have found pretty consistent reports of Dacco being cheap rebuilds (at stock or near stock performance levels) that won't hold up well.
