EGR good or not

Removing the EGR will increase the combustion temperature and pressure, and possibly increase power. But at the least, your engine computer will complain if it's not working properly. At worst, disabling it will cause the combustion temperature and pressure to increase enough to cause detonation, as well as increased emissions. If you have to have regular emission checks, you may fail those.
I think the EGR system on a 1994 302 is pretty simple; the exhaust passages are all inside the intake manifold, leading up to the throttle body, where the valve opens a port at the right time to inject exhaust into the intake. The valve (with a position sensor monitored by the EEC) is vacuum actuated, and the vacuum is controlled by two solenoids, activated by the EEC. What about it is causing you pain?
The simplest way to defeat it would be to disconnect and plug the vacuum line. You can run it that way to see if you have any detonation problems, or a CEL. If you want to remove the valve, you will need to make a blocking plate to cover up the intake and exhaust holes.

xlt4wd90 is right on in his post.
As for any power increase by removing the EGR you may not see any. AS you engine is now when ever you give you engine more fuel by stepping on the throttle the ECU will disable the EGR anyway. The EGR system only works at part throttle and cruise not when you demand higher power levels such as acceleration.
