I have a warranty but it's an aftermarket warranty, and they are kind of a pain in the *** to deal with, actually I need to cancel it cause I have the aftermarket stuff in that voids it out. Was doing some research and I guess that my front pump is actually in the torque convertor? If that's the case I might just apgrade the convertor and be done with it, IF that actually is the problem.

Fuel Cooler water pump - whine

I had a similar whine, no pattern, cold, hot, rain, sun, morning, night ... but only once every few months. Not a lot of power with the whine, but in a 1/2 mile or so, whine stops, power returns.

Local shop took a look, said the fuel cooler water pump was on it's way out. 2.5 hours labor, $150 pump, and I'm really hoping I don't have the problem anymore.

Hmm... I didn't know there was a seperate pump for that... I'll look and listen, mine just happened and now it's there all the time... I don't think its that though but I'll give it a shot cause I'm running out of things to look at, this weekend if I have time I'm going to take the belt off and see if it goes away

the fuel cooler is not belt driven. i believe it is on the driver side behind radiator. it is common for fuel cooler to make noise when bad, but i think it may be a different noise. youtube bad fuel cooler pump i know i tried comparing it to yours a while back.

I looked at the video and I don't think that's quite it... I did some snooping around and fuel cooler and saw that my sight glass looked empty, so I was like what the heck?! Popped the cap and it was actually completely full... I remember I looked at it like 6 months ago and it was a little over half in the sight glass.. Not sure how it is full now...

Kept snooping around and I can almost hear the whine noise now at idle, so I flipped it to high idle (pto) and I can kinda hear it better, sounds like it's coming from the alternator which I kind of already tested on e before but it passed, so I took a long screw driver and tried to listen and it's deffinently making a whine noise not sure if it's the one that I'm hearing so loudly though... Tomorrow when I have more day like I'm def gonna take off the belt and see what happens, if it goes away then I'm thinking it's the alternator.

I listened to it again just now, and I have a question. Should I hear any whining coming from the altenator, I know there is going to be a little atleast cause of the pulley, but this sounds like its more than the pulley. Just curious to if anyone has listened to there's before when it wasn't bad, and can tell me what is expected from a good altenator with no whine

when you go to listen with the screw driver also listen and compare it to the other belt driven components. see if any others are louder or not to track down which one is most likely making the noise.

Funny story... I tried that and the screwdriver vibrated off and I didn't realize it till after I about jammed it into the belt by accident, luckily I have ninja like reflexes and caught my self, needless to say I stopped with the screw driver after that... Lol. Might pick up a stethoscope... That would be a bit safer

Rather than risk any damage trying to use a screwdriver, try using a section of rubber hose. It will transmit the sound just fine, almost like a stethoscope.

I ended up getting my hands on a stethoscope. I think it's either the altenator or the tensioner. I'm going to take off my belt either tomorrow or Sunday, just so I can be 100% sure that it's belt driven. Don't want to spend 200 on a new alt if it doesn't fix the problem... Tensioner isn't that expensive I don't think iland ill end up replacing it regardless since I noticed that it was a little bouncy, so the spring tension is shot even if the bearings aren't

the tensioners are very common and give noise while cold, belt chirp but usually goes away warm. if you look at the tensioner its 2 half's where if turns on itself. look at the gap between them, it should be even when good. if it looks like it is angled the tensioner is failing and will eventually throw the belt. with the belt off just spin all the pulley and see if anything is noisy or binds when turning.

well I took the belt off this morning, and I don't SEEM to here the whine while it's off. so I took out the alternator and took it to autozone to have it tested. the guy said that the diodes failed. so I took it to the oreilly's around the corner and had them test it, and that guy said that everything passed, including the diodes. I watched the first guy do it, and it only got up to around idle speed. I was hoping while it was being tested I could hear the whining noise, but I didn't hear it, it seemed to be normal, but like I said that was no faster then idle RPM would be. about to yank the tensioner too while I have everything apart just to check it, and I'm going to hand spin everything to see if I can get anymore clues as to what it could be.

Ok, well I was wrong. And I officially am starting from scratch... Not belt drive ... Although it seems like the noise isn't has loud when the belt is off... So what else could cause I whine... I'm stumped and I can take it to the dealer for a nother 2 weeks, and I'm about to hit north Oklahoma where it's pretty cold so.. Any ideas are welcome.

Back to square one ...

Probably no surprise, my new Fuel coolant pump did not solve the problem.

Firing up the truck Friday night, after it sat all week, I backed out of garage, idled for 5 minutes, and headed down the street --- little power, high loud whine, but within 1/2 mile the whine releases and power returns, and everything seems normal.

(That said, for the first time in 10,000 miles I got a highway average of 15 mpg. I'm assuming the new fuel coolant pump had something to do with it.)

So ... like countryboy, I'm back to square one.
