It's no secret that the 5.0L is just as fuel efficient as the 3.5L and in some cases more so. The difference comes with the low end torque.

+1. The 5.0L is a very efficient engine, and the inherent efficiency of a smaller engine gets mitigated by the energy it takes to build boost.

I think the 3.31-equipped EcoBoost trucks have a slight edge on fuel economy, but certainly not by much.

super crew 6.5ft bed 3.73 rear end. I'm at 13.9 lifetime mpg. I reset my mpg every time I fill my tank. At the end of the majority of my tanks, I see between 13 and 14 mpg. Where I live completely screws my mpg. I live in downtown boise across the street from the boise state campus. to even get out of the area surrounding my apartment I have to wait at a light. If i go through the light and into campus, theres at least one light every block, sometimes closer. The rest of down town is similar its all a 1 block grid system and the majority of the lights are on timers which causes a lot of waiting around. this is with some mixed in free way driving ,commuting 4-5 times a week to work and 2-3 times a week to mom's or the in laws.

My last tank my mpg got up to and stayed 16 mpg for a while. When i filled up on sunday it had fallen to 15.5. This tank was spent almost exclusively driving in suburbia/farm roads with 1 mile grids, free way, and highway driving. It started dropping immediately as soon as I had to do some driving around my end of town. Since my fill up on sunday, I'm at 12.5 and thats almost entirely just driving near downtown and campus.

These EB motors don't like to idle at all, you can watch your mpg's drop the longer you idle. If you drive them to get them to get up and go your not gonna see the great mpg's. The EB ideal speed is 60mph on highway. My lifetime mpg's were 16, on mainly flatlands. City driving and winter fuels will kill the mpg's. Should do better on highway. You also got one of the heaviests of the F150's along with the highest gears. Great for city driving, effortless to 0-60 but you got to pay to play!!

This is a great subject... I just bought a new Gem Green Metallic 2013 145 inch wb SuperCrew ecoboost 4x4 3.31 and I have just over 300 miles on it now and i am getting 15.2 mpg .... I live in Wi but have a heated garage so I don't have to let it idle a long time for warm up. I hope to get better mileage after winter and break in time is past... I know if I can't at least get 19 mpg after say 8 - 10k miles, I will be a little disappointed. I traded off the 2012 SuperCab 4x4 145 inch wb with a 3.7 motor and 3.73 gears as it kept having starting troubles that were never fixed. But anyway, my 3.7 was getting 19 + mpg. In the summer on a long highway trip it averaged 20.6 mpg. So I hope the ecoboost can at least come close to that ....

Highway 19 is achieveable but city,,well that's another topic. lower gears definelty help but even the sticker says 17 average,,But it comes down to how you drive and terrain, lots of hills will let the turbos sing and they love to drink..

Very little difference if any on mpg's, whether it be towing or daily driving.

Here's a record of all of my fill ups over the first 6000 miles of owning the truck.

FX4 (Ford F-150) | Fuelly

Under pure highway driving, I've seen around 20 mpg, but idling or city driving always creeps in a some point during a tank so I never record that at fill up.

Average tanks include around 20% city driving on average. Some of the low mpg tanks (13-14 mpg) are interstate trips at 75-85 mph usually with strong cross or head wind.

Winter fuel has also taken its toll on highway mileage as well as needing to idle the truck for 30 minutes before and after work to melt ice and snow off the windshield.

I'd say I'm hoping for ~20 highway summer and ~17 winter as overall averages.

x2 on the covers, 4 different trucks and never any difference. 17.1 lifetime average with 70 percent suburban/30 percent highway, max tow supercab fx4.

I've had my new truck for a week. I have 350 miles on my new truck and the fuel economy display reads 14.6! I drive 66 highway miles round trip to work and back at 65mph. Granted it snowed here yesterday and I did drive in truck in 4 wheel high on the highway and I did let it warmup in the mornings at 9 degrees. I'll be patient for a while hoping it goes up. I appreciate everyone's input. Adios.

I had a 13 EB maxtow,3.73 6.5 bed.4x4, my mileage stayed at 15 for the longest time, when I hit 3k it started to rise and in summer was hovering around 17. winter killed it to 16. Give it time to break in. Its all in how you drive it. no doubt 60 is the prime speed for mpg's as you got up it goes down.

That's not break-in MPG, it's all about how you have driven it. Driving over and through snow takes energy, as does spinning your front driveline. The faster you go, the more these parasitic losses burn up your gas. Idling to warm up the engine also burns through gas. Frankly I think 14.6 for these conditions is pretty good.

I almost never let the engine idle, as I'm a bit of a nut job for efficiency. I got 13 MPG on the way to the hospital this morning. And that's just fine because I was plowing through 4" of snow in 4WD at 25-35 MPH.

I'm happy to be able to join this thread. Just picked up a 3.31 geared EB tonight. Dealer demo with 4500 miles on it. For the life of that 4500 the lie-o-meter stated 16.4mpg. I reset the Trip A tonight with a full tank and I will continue to report my progress.
