Transmission compatibility question

I found a 92 7.3 zf5 s5-42 4x4 used not rebuilt for $650. Question is will it fit in my 96 7.3 zf5 4x4 s5-47? From what i have read on here, is the only differrence is the gear ratio... but i just wana double check, because i also found a complete 91 7.3 zf5 s5-42 but not 4x4 for $1500...

I remember reading something on here about 4x4 to 4x2 would not have a place for the TC except for some old 4x2 f-350 with some kind of side parking break...

I think you meant your '96 is 4x2?

A 4x4 transmission won't really work for you. I'm not sure if it's feasible to swap the tailshaft parts between a -42 and -47. (By the way, a -47 had some durability upgrades--not just gearing differences)

BUT, since the 4x4 transmission is so cheap, consider adding a transfer case to it. No, you won't have axles to go with it, but you will gain low range to pull your boat out of the water with and it will likely be cheaper than the $1500 4x2 transmission.
