had a 99 superduty 5.4.towed my camper ok at 10k fully loaded but I would never take it for coal with the dump trailer.fell into a 01 7.3 for 5k under book and only 108,800 on it at the time.i love towing with it.now I can take the mountains with the dump trailer fully loaded and some in the bed.do I need it nope. but at only 5,000 miles a year average its not breaking me either.

I first bought one for my hobby.........dragging my rockcrawler around. Got sick of the 7.2 MPG towing with the 5.4, and the Jeep was going to get fatter and need a heavier trailer, and I also bought a house and needed an 8 foot bed. Bought and owned a 07 5.9 Dodge for 3 years. Did everything better than the F150, better fuel mileage towing and empty, despite being a dually. Did not do my nerves much good due to "dodge" issues.

That allowed me to load my pop up on the front of my goose and adequately deal with the pin weight, and also sold me on the benefits of the dually. So I went back to Ford early this year and went with the same platform. I love this truck and the power of the 6.7. 2 months after I bought it I decided that I'm done wheeling and the Jeep is for sale, but we're going to be 5th wheel shopping soon as the jeep goes................

Long and short, I do use the truck for towing, hauling firewood, mulch, people, but I really did buy I because I could and I wanted to. Some days it just hauls 4 mountain bikes, sure don't need a dually for that, but when I do need it to step up to the plate, it's always ready to go.

I considered both when I was shopping for a truck to haul my fifth wheel. I told my wife that if I was getting a gas that it had to have low miles. I knew the cost that it takes to keep a diesel maintained do to the fact that I have three PowerStrokes for my business. I ended up finding an 08 6.4 crewcab long bed in West Virginia that was in my budget.

IMO, alot of these younger people want them for the cool factor of them blowing black smoke when tuned out without realizing the cost of routine maintenance.

I've had two diesel Super Duties, and my last two trucks have been gas. I decided that I really don't tow often enough to justify the added expense. I liked every one of my trucks for different reasons, but my favorite was my 2011 F350; with the 6.7L engine and 3.55 gears it was good for 20 MPG on the highway.

Tom,
Do u watch "Top Gear" on History
The last episode they had a competition with 3 factory trucks....
1. Ram 1500 w/a Hemi V8
2. Toyota Tundra w/a iForce V8
3. F150 w/a Eco-Boost V6

Anyway 1 of the challenges was to tow a large commercial Airplane through a course on an open runway......The F150 EcoBoost freaking Dominated (impressive)

100% better mileage then a v10 empty
60% better mileage then a v10 loaded
Add that up and deduct for maintenance costs and guess what. I'm still ahead

Like many others here, I really don't need a Super Duty. I was looking mainly for an 04+ F-150, while secretly wanting an 05-07 SD. I looked around at quite a few different trucks. Most of the F-150s I looked at were around $14-15K with around 100K miles. I looked at a few 05-07 Diesel SDs but they were all over $20K, which was more than I wanted to spend, plus they all had 150-200K miles on them. Then I found this nice bright red 05 5.4 F-350 with 85K miles for only $13K. At that point it was pretty much a no brainer since it was less than the F-150s I was looking at and had less miles. Sure, I would have loved to have a Diesel, but the bottom line was that I simply didn't need it and found a deal I couldn't pass up on a gasser.
