why do average people buy diesels?

I'm in a similar situation as 05F250DSL. I was starting to look around for a newer truck and a coworker had one he was getting rid of since he moved out of state and wasn't taking it with him. I couldn't pass it up at $7k, clean carfax, almost nothing on the Oasis. '03 F350 6.0 CCLB, 6" lift, 37" treads, class III hitch and fifth wheel set up, intake and 4" turbo back exhaust. I'm in the middle of bulletproofing it and when I'm done I'll still be into it for less than book value. And it opens up buying an RV to tow next summer. My '99 Chevy regular cab 4.3L wasn't good of much in that category.

In all seriousness, buying a diesel probably doesn't make financial sense for a lot of the people who buy them. But neither does going on vacation, or going out to eat, but people spend thousands on those things every year. I just choose to spend my money on what I drive.

My first diesel was purchased in May of 2001. It was a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500HD 4X4 quad cam short bed. In 2001 diesel was less than $1.00 a gallon (about $0.25 less than gasoline) That truck with a few mods got over 24MPH on the interstate until she was murdered on Dec. 25, 2011 with over 185,000 miles on her. When I bought my diesel I pulled a 1949 Wills Jeep on a 16' trailer. The same rig I pulled with my v6 1994 Dakota. But I wanted a big truck, I was single so I said why not and I did. Now I have 2 big trailers that I wouldn't hook to a gaser. I bought my E99 F250 because I wanted to pay cash for my next truck and it had to be a full size 4 door truck. Nothing on the road beets a CC super duty. Saying all that I hate the 7.3 stroker in this truck. It doesn't have grunt that the cummins had and it certainly doesn't get the fuel mileage. But my Dodge was rusting out around that motor and this Ford is 15 years old and just started this year rusting in the wheel arches. -Jason

$15k off the sticker for being willing to even just look at the leftover 6.0 behind the row of brand new 2008 6.4s and 6.8s didn't hurt the dealers negotiating position one bit....

I had a 6.0 liter sierra that I traded in for my F 250 diesel. It tows my travel trailer better than my gasser ever thought about. I honestly don't think I will ever own a gasser again other than my wife's car.

Because I got a good deal on mine, and it's proven to be the most reliable, lowest cost of ownership vehicle I've ever had. And I hate the smell of gasoline engine exhaust.
