New to Powerstroke

It was fine before the trip. On the way back is when it started doing it. Not really much to do about it but get it home and fix it. So that's what I did. Yes, I'm aware it was dangerous and had I had extremely questionable brakes I would've had it towed home but it wasn't as bad as you probably think.

Ok so I thought maybe the brake problem was because it was towing something heavy. I guess it's going to stay like this. So, every time I hit the brake pedal, an airy sound happens. I thought maybe some air had gotten into the lines so I bled the system. Got a little bit better but still almost no pedal and still the airy sound. I figured I would see what you guys thought before I started throwing parts at it...thanks!

Well, I re-adjusted the rear brakes since I had just done a rear brake job, that helped the braking issues, and it stops on a dime, but the hissing sound is still there. It's currently in the shop (a trustworthy friend this time) getting a rear main seal, getting the transmission checked out (the guy who "stole" my truck probably cobbled it back together in order to avoid jail because when the clutch is not engaged, the whole truck shakes and makes awful noises), and having the rest of the truck looked through. I'm going to have him put a new booster in it.

The rear main is very possible to leak. If it isn't leaking now though, why do it? Mine was done when John Wood put the new trans in, but it is right there and the part is $30, so it makes sense to do it while you're in there. But, if you are doing it just to do it, maybe wait until its needed.

^^Agreed. I wouldn't point the finger at the rear main until you're absolutely positive that it isn't something leaking from up above. It could be coming from the valley, turbo pedestal seals, EBPV Cylinder, even the rail plugs in the back of the heads. Those things are a lot more common sources of leaks than the rear main.
I agree with Byron, that if you're in there it might make sense to do it, but I sure as heck wouldn't pull the trans to do that until I had ruled everything else out.

I too agree with these fine gentlemen. My guess if fuel rail banjo, plug or the fuel line to the rear of the head is leaking.
I thought it was my rear main too, but I noticed diesel in the valley when I was replacing the fuel pump, and found the leak to be the fuel rail plug. O-ring had probably long been eaten away. I never got around to fixing the leak though, yet.
Does it look like this?
This is where I noticed the fuel coming down, since it was collecting in my flywheel inspection cover...

Great thread, i like these ones that read like a autophile novel..
Sounds like youve had a crash course on OBS PSD R&R op and you've got some good support so far. Looks like your gettin a handle on it.
Where do you and your brother go wheelin? I belong to the Western Maine Mountain Jeepers and we put on the Maine Jeep Jamboree in Bethal Maine every Oct.

Thanks for all the info guys. The truck is currently at my friends shop to store it for a bit. I think it's going to get a RMS anyways because the transmission is sounding AWFUL so I'm having him take it apart to check everything out after the last guy screwed me. After that, I'll check out the other places it could be leaking. Question, I have been told that there is a brace made for the firewall by the pedal assembly. This person told me I should do it before my firewall cracks. I've never heard of it or seen it. Is this made up or is this actually a problem on these trucks? He has an f350 with the 460 and said he's going to do it to his. I have just never heard of it
