Hey Clint!
Wolf, my ranger is 4cyl with the 8 plug head. Those heads are somewhat weak between the valves from factory lending themselves to cracks. It already has 208000 on the clock and I hope for 2 or 3 hundred k more so I went with a new casting from aftermarket that claims to have beefed up the weak spots.
Oven cleaner .... I never thought of that to clean tank... may work great. Let us know if you try it how it works.

Maybe some of the "cheap" greased lightning from a dollar store would work on that sugar. Then some cheap gas (HA!) to clean the cleaner residue out before the first fill up???
Thursday is here, rain is GONE and it's starting to cool down. PERFECT football weather.

Gene? You have my old engine in your truck.
I was thinking just last night what engines ford made that were 4 cylinder - and how big they went. The 70's Capri had a 2.8 that might be findable these days - and would be a bolt-up boost in cubic.
They were carbueretted, and a lot of mods came out for them over the years....
Just a notion.
I don't know if the trannies are the same - you should have a Toyo Kogyo that uses ATF for gear oil even if its a standard shift.
The weak point on them is they leak from the shift rod holes, and metal plugs should be used to replace the original rubber ones (like freeze plugs, but smaller)
* The original rubber plugs, after heating and cooling a lot over the years, CRACK AND SHRINK! So they leak out your fluid like a rusted collander...
BE WARNED!!!
If that trans ever EVER gets low on fluid, say goodby to IT and about a thousand bucks.
*And that's IF you can find one...
OVEN CLEANER is the best substitute for hard core engine cleaner around. I never use anything else for stuck on grease anymore...
It took the tank bottom down to bare metal, and now I'm thinking about the sides and top.
It sprayed out with a hose on needle spray - and the junk in it flaked off in big chunks.
It's going to need a bit more work, but yes! The stuff worked like a charm.

I'll have Woola next to me - if she isn't warming the puppies
You want to be careful of what you combine with fuel though - never use bleach!
You will have rocket fuel on your hands...
That is very dangerous, because bleach is an oxidizer, and the combination will explode.
The beauty of oven cleaner is that is a simple water rinse-off
Anything to do with gas tanks is a touchy subject. Vapor can cause an explosion when welding on them and so forth...
You want to think carefully before doing anything with a tank that has ever had gas in it.
~It can soak into the steel and produce vapors when you least expect it
*THINK FRAGMENTATION GRENADE*
~Yes, they are that dangerous to mess with

That is very true. Flames and electricity will set them off in an instant.
The fuel we get nowadays is much like sugar. I have had several in-tank fuel pump jobs over the last 2 years, mostly because of fuel sitting in the for long periods of time. The tanks get a brown gummy yuk all inside and the pumps and senders get rusted and gummed up. I noticed that the old gas even had a fermented smell to it.

I've decided to go with an external pump setup. I looked it up ("Wolfed it Out!") and it's supposed to get 20-30 psi from the pump, regulated down to 11. So I'll go about a 25PSI juicer into a 12-15 PSI max squeezer...
That gets the potential igniter out of the FAE so I don't have to have a fuel pump relay - besides, I never liked in tank electric ANYTHING!!!
~Dunno if the float sensor is any good, but I can work with a setup like that.
If the whole thing turns out to be really jacked - it may have dual weber side-drafts in its future

I'm happy to see "ROCKAUTO" is one of our sponsors - they were recommended to me by my bud across the street as a "GO TO" place -
And sure enough, they had the fuel filter sock I was looking for!
ALSO the filter (in-frame)
www.rockauto.com
Check them out - its one of the best searchable parts places online I have seen.
ITS QUICK!
~ They also have lots of STUFFF....
*I'm amazed, my "DOORSTOP" (computer) hasn't frozen so far tonight except for once earlier around 5PM when I was looking at Jay Leno's Garage
Maybe its because I left it shut off all day yesterday
Even Jay Leno would be appalled at my domestic habits, I have the fuel tank access hatch in my kitchen sink soaking in oven cleaner. I figured the stainless steel screens I bought for the drains would capture the chunks of crap - and the oven cleaner is a kitchen chemical
That has to clean the drain out, RIGHT?
WOOLA says "Hi!"
~Ciao for now...
The puppies are BIG
(Cap letters for a reason)
My camera has failed
(I think the batteries are gone)
ALABAMABUDDOG:
Do you have a clear voice channel , or is 901 335 0194 YOU?
*I dunno if it is a text channel only
Did I mention that the pups seem unusually BIG????
Those dogs are going to be BIG....
