i don't have one to measure, but perhaps this is an option for you:
Ford Racing M-6750-D303 Chrome Transmission Dipstick & Tube C4

or:
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/c4-transmission-dipstick

price seems reasonable.

Full running in Park fluid level is even with the case/pan connection.

Run a stick outside the tube and make a mark.

my dipstick full line is about 2'' up in the tube-when it was a half quart lower it would slip. Is it really that critical if a pan fill trans is overfull a little ? I'm just curious because my trans has always slipped at low rpms off the pedal in reverse until you give it a decent amount of throttle, shifts great in all forward gears though

Have a look at the breather. If it is plugged it will give an erroneous reading.
