Boost, wastegate, turbo related question.

Hey guys, haven't been on in wayyy too long. Trucks been running great and everything's been going good with it. So today I pulled the trigger and got a set of p.i.s stage 2's 160/100% injectors from Jody today. Tonight I was doing a few runs to get some numbers for comparison. On my last run I dropped the hammer and when the trans hit lock up and boost got to 28 psi there was a pop under the hood and boost dropped to 12 psi and that's all she do now. It's 8 p.m now and pitch black out but I imagine there's a hole in a c.a.c boot somewhere or the wastegate is stuck open or is having some sort of issue. Any idea's? I'll thoroughly check th boots everywhere in a minute. When you roll on it she builds boost to 12 psi and then makes a wicked vacuum leak noise along with the 6637 noise. There's a rebuild kit for the turbo and ww gen 2 on its way anyway. maybe I'll have to get the cac boots too..thanks for any input guys! As always.

sounds like you just popped an IC pipe out of the boot! pop the hood, put her back and clamp down real tight!! i had this happen once and it left a dent in my hood..

If sounded like a loud bang, then I would agree with diehardstroker, it may just have been an intercooler boot that just popped off due to oil inside the boots. Look for the 4 boots on the system. You will have two up at the Y pipe and the other 2 on either side of the intercooler itself down by the batteries on both sides. If they are stock boots they would be colored blue.
Hope this helps.

Ehh there's something going on here. And im 90 percent sure its not the boots. Just checked them again. No evident holes. It was going up on the lift tomorrow night for prepping anyway, guess I'll check the wheel first and if it checks out, the up pipes, gaskets, so on and so forth. The turbo seems to be losing the boost it builds. It makes a hissing noise like an air hose that suddenly startles you as the hose brakes at the 3/8's fitting connected to your air tool acrossed the shop and you jump out of your pants.

Sorry lol was adding to my first post initially. It made the noise like it did pop a boot but this noise it makes is not the noise of a popped boot. The turbo usually chirps a little when that happens and it makes less boost. I've checked all the boots, including the valve cover boots. I will triple check them. I'm going to go check them right now and if I don't find a loose one I'll check the wheel quick too.

Oh, bummer. Was hoping it was something simple. I'll tell you what, have a nice cold beer and a long deep breath.

What kind of a job am I looking at if you dont mind me asking? It's got to be intercooler related. That's why I'm so quick to jump the gun. The turbos doing its job, as is the 6637, all the coolers piping is good, as the air intake tubing. No exhaust leaks. It's got to be the intercooler, or these tanks you speak of? I guess I don't really know the intercooler part of these, lol I've never had to mess with it.

well where the IC pipes connect to the IC theres the short pipe the boot is on and that flares up to what i call the end "tanks" some of the IC have plastic end tanks and others have aluminum end tanks.

if you click on this link therell be a pic. of an aftermarket IC, you have the horizontal rows in the middle and then on the ends you have the tow inlets and the smooth area of the IC those are the end tanks

I went out and tried checking the intercooler as best as I could without pulling anything. There's no obvious hole but doesn't mean it's not cracked. It definitely makes sense it's dumping it's air there.

Just want to double check, did you look at the boots that connect to the plenums?

As best as I could, its 9 38 pm and 31 degrees outside here in ny lol so it's hard to spend a lot of time at once on it. Because the noise is different then it usually is when an intercooler boot is off it could be a plenum boot. Maybe tomorrow when it's light out I'll be able to confirm it one way or another. Is it going to hurt it to drive it to work tomorrow? It's only 10 miles and fifteen minutes, then I can get it on my lift and shed some light on the situation.

It shouldn't be an issue but it'll be laggy with low power and your gonna have to watch your egts real good I had to drive 20 miles once with a boot blown till I could get to work and get it back on. Didn't hurt a thing
