1996 Ford powerstroke. History of problem, started idled fine, backed up started running extremely rough and dies. Restarted all was fine, drove 3 blocks and engine started running very rough and barely made it back home.

It will start fine, runs 3-5 seconds, than starts idling extremely rough,engine light comes on and it then dies. Replaced cps, checked fuel filter and ran scan, no codes. Any ideas what'a wrong?

Where did you buy the cps? You should only use Ford or IH cps's, the parts store ones are junk.

What did you use to scan it ?
If the light came on then you have a code.
I'd start with UVCH

 

Purchased OEM CPS from dealer. Scanned with Edge Evolution programmer.

 

Forgot to mention, the valve harnesses were replaced by the dealer last year. The fuel pump is was replaced 2 years ago.

 

will it stay running part throttle? like 1/4 to 1/2 pressed pedal

 

What codes did you get? If there was a CEL, there should be a code.

 

more than likely the engine light comes on because truck had already died and not because of a code.... he stated no codes when scanned....

 

I can sometimes keep the truck running by pumping the throttle, however, its very difficult!
Could I have a faulty ICP, can I test by unplugging? Thanks!

 

that could be done...unplugging yes it should keep running, if that's the culprit.... however I don't know if you can drive around like that

 

What scanner did you use to scan it ?
There is only 3-4 scanners that'll work on these trucks

 

He also stated "engine light comes on, then it dies".

 

Hard to tell when the cel comes on! Scanned with edge evolution programmer.

 

Unplugged the ICP connector, still runs rough and dies. Scanned, it picked up the fault, cleared fault and started again, no fault recorded. Checked oil in HPOP, its fine. Looks like it might be the IPR? Your thoughts?
