1990 F350 4x4 Front Brake Shimmy-Shake

Hi

Just picked up a 1990 F350 7.5 L, 5 speed, crew 4x4 that is in great shape, low miles (105k), etc. Runs like a top but the only issue I am having is that the front end shakes/shimmys/shudders when applying the brakes.

It has a newish steering stabilizer, newer tires and wheels.

Any help or pointers in the right direction to get this addressed would be appreciated!

Thanks

Jason

Rotors sound like they are warped.

Turn your rotors or replace then .You may want to check for cracks in your old rotors before turning them.If cracked put new ones on.

thanks for the feedback - I will take a look at the rotors and see if they need turned/replaced.

a suggestion: its such a laborious task (relatively speaking) to get to the rotors on the 4x4 trucks that I would replace rather than turn. get some freshys in there to maximize the amount of time between now and having to go in there again.

I was leaning towards new rotors rather than re-surfacing. Will probably do new pads and service the calipers while I am in there too. Thanks for all the help.

I have a question regarding this: Personally I have an opinion, but I'd rather hear from the rest of you guys, do I need to turn the rotors every time I replace the pads?. Personally I think it isn't always necessary, but still, I want to know what do you guys think.

I agree with just replacing the rotors since you'll be in there anyways. Don't risk it.

As to whether they always need to be turned? Doing brakes is not a regular job. It generally comes after several years of hard driving. Why not just have them turned, assuming they have life left in them and are not cracked or warped?

By the time the brake pads are worn down enough to replace the rotors on my last 4-5 vehicles it is too worn to turn IMHO. I install new rotors.

When I was pinching pennies in my younger days I had a few rotors turned when performing brake service. This typically resulted in warped rotors within a short period of time.

I don't ever turn rotors. I either replace the rotors/pads, or just the pads.
