As crazy as it sounds, I didn't have a transmission jack when I did mine. I use ratchet straps and cradled the tranny using the frame of the truck. I also had the transmission and transfer case together when I was pulling and installing.

Funny, I did the same thing once. Time consuming but it worked!

Is there any difference on the internals between the 3/4 ton and 1 ton E40D as far as beefiness? The trans I'm picking up is out of a 1 ton. I called the shop who rebuilt it in 2002 and they said that all their records showed, was that it was a stock rebuild. Thanks!

as long as it's from behind a diesel and the same drive configuration as your truck they should be identical.

Sweet! From what I gathered from the trans shop and the salvage yard, the trans was rebuilt in December of 2002 and the yard has had the truck for about 5 years, as the engine went and the PO didn't want to spend anymore on it. I'm thinking that there isn't many miles on it.

I removed my transfer case before I removed the transmission. It seems safer to me and it's one less thing to mess with at the same time.

To the OP, f it were me (and it was at one point, although I wasn't in the middle of a road trip), I would replace the E4OD with a ZF 5 speed manual. Aaron said earlier that the cost to have an E4OD rebuilt was around $2k. That seems very optimistic to me, but I never actually had mine rebuilt, so take that for what it's worth. It'll wind up costing you about $2k to get a ZF 5 speed transmission in there before it's all said and done.

Hey all...just wanted to let ya know I got my my tranny swap done this evening! . Thanks to everyone who answerd questions along the way!

Something I noticed, is the pressure line passes within about 1/2" of the exhaust. What is a good heat shield I can rig up to block the heat?

I would say a piece of sheet metal bent as a shield. If it's in the spot that I'm thinking it's in, you can attach it to some of the pan bolts for the transmission. Hope this helps. Or you could what Mike said.

I have the heat shield that bolts to the trans if you want it. Wont be needing it now that I have a ZF 5.

Is that the one that protects the harness towards the rear?

yeah towards the rear on the passenger side. I believe they refer to it as the solenoid connector.
