Hello FTE.. I got a 2002 Excursion with a V10 and I refuse to sell it..Butt the gas is killing me...
Ok, So I was hoping to post in a Tech Forum, but it looks like i can't, so here goes...
So, after poching information from it forum for a few years, I purchased a Tuner from Mike at 5 Star Tunning and was very happy with the Econo 87 tune. My results were 13.5 MPG per the Lie O Meter, 12.5 when doing the Math. This is at 2250 RPM & 70 MPH.
Since, I have now installed a SPC Y-Pipe also from Mike at 5 Star Tuning. I don't have any true facts on improvment, but here's what I do know...
Off the line, my truck feels less slugish. Also Now when driving at 70 MPH my RPM's have droped to 2100. As far as MPG, The verdict is still out. The test will be at the end of this month, May 2013. I will be driving from California to Colorado and back. I expect to drive about 2500 miles and log my mileage the entire time i.e through the deserts and through the rockies. So, Stay Tuned...
Quetsions:
What PSI do you recammend I run my tires at for the best MPG? I was told 70..
What highway speed do you get the best MPG at? What are your RPM's?
Would you do anything else to improve Mileage?
Thank you in advance,
Brad Horton

Welcome to FTE Brad, you are now part of the best automotive forum I have ever seen!

Something here is not right, in OD at highway speed your torque converter is locked up and no matter what tuning changes were made the engine RPM would not change. Unless you changed tire size or gear ratio any given speed will be at a certain RPM. Maybe something got mixed up in your notes here from the "before" check?
What PSI do you recammend I run my tires at for the best MPG? I was told 70..
For best MPG you should set tire pressure to the max pressure listed on the sidewall. However some folks have reported their EX's do feel a little squirrely running solo with E load range tires set at 80PSI, mine feel fine but I do have some suspension upgrades that may affect that and I run 18"s with a slightly shorter sidewall.
What highway speed do you get the best MPG at? What are your RPM's?
My experience shows the best MPG results around 60 to 65 MPH on the highway, I do see a dropoff in mileage by the time I get up to 70MPH. I will have to check my notes for the RPMs, I'm at work now and the notes are not.
Would you do anything else to improve Mileage?
Your mileage seems a bit low at 12.5MPG, when I still had my stock 3.73 gears I would see 15MPG hand calculated (I don't have a Lie-O-Meter) on highway runs, even now with the 4.88 gears I can still get 14MPG highway running solo. Tell us some more about your EX, any other mods? Over sized tires? Lift? What gears do you have? Any exhaust work besides the Y pipe?
Thank you in advance,
Brad Horton

Is that all your getting 12.5 mpg? I can get 13.9 on the hwy at 65 with the 4.30's. and when i had 3.73's i could hit 15!!!
I have the same y pipe and tuner. In the eco. Setting i get better mileage in town, but the same as usual in the hwy. i tried te perf. Setting and my mileage went up by almost .5 mpg. So maybe that is something you want to try.

Never thought I'd say this, but it dooes sound low for a V10 on the highway even with 4.30 gears. I too would expect 14 mpg or so....
Slow down to 65 and it'll put the V10 in a sweet spot for mileage and power. Usually much over 65 mph leads to a drop in mpgs.
I'd also suggest doing your COPS, plugs, and run two bottles of this stuff through your tank:
Techron/20 oz. fuel system cleaner (65740A) | Fuel Additive and Cleaner | AutoZone.com
It cleans the fuel system up and works wonders for the V10.
If you haven't Christened your V10 and "fogged" it with Seafoam (inducing through the intake via the brake booster, I'd do this also, especially before you do the plugs, should you so choose.
Sea Foam/Engine fuel and diesel treatment (SF16) | Engine Additive and Cleaner | AutoZone.com
I've run both seafoam and the Techron additive on any gas engine I've worked on and when people get their vehicle back, their surprised as to how well it runs and performs.

Great advice so far. I will be doing all them. I'm not a Motörhead so I don't know much about the specifics of my Ex. It's stock with 295 tires, a programmer tuned to Econo 87 and a Y pipe.
Please the ideas coming and I'll reply with results. First thing first. Tire pressure increased to 65 psi and slowing down to 65 MPH. (Tough to do in So Cal and be safe)

I just change the 10 coils and spark plugs on my V10 (Had a missfire and decide it was time for genereal maintenance). It result with an improvement of 2.5/3 mpg. I bought cheap coil you can find on ebay to make a try and i'm satisfied with the result.
By the way I own my Excursion since 4 years and have look this site for info quite often but only registered recently, this site is really interesting and i love my truck!
