4WD test 73 F-100 on Switzerland trail today

So, today I decided to test the 4WD by driving Switzerland trail up in the mountains above Boulder Colorado.

I didn't do the whole trail, just from trailhead to trailhead. It was narrow at times and the drop off was significant. I didn't get any photos of the deep snow sections. Those sections were smooth and I may have hooned a little through them.

All in all an excellent drive, fresh air, sunshine and the 4wd did amazing. Not the easiest to get into and out of 4wd but the only time I was sideways was when I got carried away in one of those snow sections.

Colorado is such a beautiful state. I lived in the Springs for almost 3 years. I liked driving Phantom Canyon road from Canon City to Victor. IMO Colorado thru a Ford truck windshield and across a 6th gen hood PRICELESS. For the difficulty of getting it out of fwd, put it in reverse and idle roll, or give it a throttle blip while holding a little xfer lever pressure and rolling backwards.

Thanks 77&79F250, that makes sense. I was always on the hard pack when I was trying to shift out of 4wd. The Dana 21 had barely any oil in it when I got it, I actually pumped some fresh oil in with the drain plug out to let it wash out some of the sparkles. I'm actually impressed the 4wd works as well as it does. The Dana 21 is 2wd or 4wd, no neutral. I'm probably going to pull it and rebuild it, the shifter is pretty limp and floppy to the point I can't really feel it engage. I don't have any experience with the Dana21 so I don't know if that is normal or not.

It was a beautiful day to go there, I might go back tomorrow after the snow that we're supposed to get (alleged 1-4") take the nikon and get some photos. I definitely need to do more of this, I'm pretty sure its just good for the soul.

Things I'll take with me on the next run.... Gas can, cooler, spare 33. The truck has a factory sized spare under the bed but I dont know about driving on it and 3 33s. In fact I should add the spare tire to the project list, there is no telling how old it is or even if it holds air....

Mark8man, thanks. I see from your avatar you know a thing or two about groovy wheels. The truck came with two set of 15x10 rims with 33s, I picked the turbines to put fresh meats on. They want to be freshened up, the previous owner has painted one of them black...(sigh) guess I'll see how long I live with them like that....
