I would imagine for the backup lights and/or the Neutral Safety Switch.

Many C6 transmissions have a dual-function switch (with 4 wires) on the side.

Okay thank you. That's what I thought.
Now how do I make the swap? My c6 didn't have a single wire, do I have to hook up the wirers on the AOD?

The parts book says you should have at least two wires down at your C6, these will be for the backup lamps.

Here is the switch, E0TZ-15520-B Motorcraft SW-1579 SWITCH ASSY. (BACKUP LAMP) Marked E0TP 15520-BC
Fits 1980/82 all pickups & Broncos (vans use a different one) w/C6 transmission

If you don't have any wires down there at all, something is wrong and I'd like on the harness for remnants. A 1980 truck has the NSS at the steering column.

This stuff won't affect your installing an AOD, it's just that you won't have backup lamps.

Are you sure you want make this swap? The C6 is more robust than the AOD, and the AOD can be tough to get setup correctly. It will self destruct if you don't get the TV cable/rod hooked up properly (which can be tough to do on engines with aftermarket carbs/intakes, or when mixing parts between different model years.).

I assume you are looking for better fuel economy. Search on the posts for AOD and TV cable/rod setup before deciding if it is worth the effort.

Yes I am looking for better economy. I have a put a Holley 650 on, but I will be able to figure the tv cable out.
I looked at the wireing harness yesterday and saw plugs hanging where the transmission is, today I will compare them with the 1985 AOD. If it is just the reverse lamps it's not that big a deal

When you unplug the neutral switch on the AOD it doesn't start- obviously.
How am I going to bypass this? (If you are wondering, I need both trucks to be working properly)
