Lights and Wiring

I'm going to be putting clearance lights on the top of my cab, and maybe 3 small amber lights in the grille (like the F150 Raptor). I may also have extra tail lights to hook up on a headache rack. I would like to wire the lights into the system with the regular lights. I want to wire them to come on when the side clearance lights and tail lights turn on.

Does anyone know how much extra capacity there is in the relay/fuse/wiring? I don't mind putting in a higher capacity relay/fuse or whatever, but I don't want to do that and then burn up wiring...

I have fog lights and off-road lights wired into separate switches, but I would rather not have another switch for these accessory lights.

Thanks in advance!

Use a relay and hook the coil to your marker lamps.

In the diagram below hook the YEL wire to one of the brown marker wires and disregard the switch to the left.

So basically you're saying I should just hook up a new relay for my new marker lights, and let the same switch operate the relay as the regular lights?

Can I buy a relay "box" or "holder" to put the new relay(s) in? Or should I just find a safe spot under my dash and hook quick connects onto it or solder to it?

Yes.

I would just screw the relay on as in the photo below.

Quick connects should do it.

Disregard the writing in the photo, just showing how I mounted two relays.

Okay, I've never seen a relay that mounts like that, just ones you plug into a panel. I'll see if I can get one.

Thanks for the help!

Okay, I don't see a rating on the one you linked me to. Do you know what the amp cap is?

Thanks for the help!

I got the lights and relay today. I'm not sure where to tap into the switch for the main lights. I want my clearance lights to come on when the amber side marker and tail lights come on, and I want them to be on when the main driving lights are on. So, in other words, I want them to be turned on with the first and second stop in the stock headlight pull switch.

Do you know the wire color and location to tap into that switch for it to operate the relay? I can't find a relay that "clicks" when turning the lights on/off. Do the main lights run straight off of the switch without a relay? If so, I'll check the fusebox tomorrow and use an "add a fuse" and run the wire off of that to operate my new relay.

Bill, you mentioned using power off the coil to the relay. I have an accessory fuse panel mounted under my dash that I put there not long ago. I'll run power to the relay off of that.

Thanks for the help!

There should be a plug behind the drivers side kick panel that's for the roof clearance lights. It's a two wire rectangle connector. Should be pretty obvious once you pull the kick panel. No need for extra relays or wiring for those.

Okay, I'll look for that tomorrow. I'm putting the extra relay in it because I am not only going to put roof lights on, but some others as well (some amber lights, and tail lights without braking filament). Just don't want to run the risk of smoking old wires and having to deal with a mess...

Thanks

I would not put an extra load on the light switch and that is why the relay. The light switch and plug melt already a lot of the times. If any thing I would also relive some of the load off the brown wire that it has now.

The wire color is brown as I said above but I do think I said anything about taking power off a coil to a relay to do anything.
If you put the relay under the hood I would tap the brown wire at C100 in the engine compartment.
If you put the relay inside the cab I would tap the brown wire at the warning buzzer.
See the diagran below.
