88 300 6 distributor cap

While working on my 88 300 thats going in my 87 i am now at the distributor. What gets replaced in that. The cap or the whole assembly. Is napa brand anygood. btw the whole motor is got 87 org miles so i cant see much besides the basics nneding replaced on the distributor

The important thing to replace every ~100K miles is the pickup (PIP). Most often, this is done by just swapping in a newly rebuilt distributor since replacing the PIP requires a press. That said, the quality of the iron used in the replacement gears is suspect lately, so assuming the rebuilder replaces those as a standard practice, I would shy away from a rebuilt distributor and just rebuild my own.

The other thing you can do is just carry a spare, known-good, used distributor with you - that's been my strategy. Of course the spare also has a TFI attached, one of the other things that tends to leave you stranded. Just make sure you have the proper tools to change these as well.
