Motor swap in 77 F250 4x4

Just want to see what people's thoughts were. I've got the opportunity right now to get either a 351W or a 460, which one do y'all think would be better paired with my new process 4spd?

Using either engine is gonna take work to make it fit and work, as neither one came in that truck. But its all in what you can and want to do.

Both can be made to work but it's more what you want out of it, not what we think , we all have a little different idea. __

Just curious as to which one was a better all around motor. Currently I drive my truck to and from work and occasionally weekend trail riding and mild mudding. I'm just tired of my 351M. I was told the 460 would bolt up to my transmission and I would just need to change out the mounts not sure about the Windsor though.

The rear end of the block bolt pattern is the same on the 351m , 400 and 460. I have replaced 351m with a 460 a couple of times, much better engine i think. The 351w is an altogether different engine and would need more changes to work. 460 will need different mounts and mount stands i believe, mine was not a 4x4 , so i will leave that to the 4x4 experts.

Theres a lot more involved than changing the motor mounts with the 460. You have an early and late 460, early ones you have to use a 390 flywheel, and unless you get parts from L&L or someother place, its hunt and pick. Mounts will need to be made for the 351w too, but all clutch parts are easy to find.

I think I'm going to go with the 460. I'm not extremely fimiliar with the 460 or the modified I've always had windsors, but what all would I need for the swap other then motor mounts and flywheel? The 460 is a late 70s guy who's selling it said he wasn't exactly sure but around a 77.

If I were you, I would definitely go with the 460. I just did the 351M to 460 swap and would definitely do it again. There is very good product support specifically for this swap (bronco graveyard, L and L, etc) and while the 460 is not cheap to build when compared to a smallblock chevy, its worth it. Plus, you already have the bellhousing and tranny.

What exactly about the flywheel? I've talked to a few people about this swap and that's the first time I have heard that mentioned.

460 not available with a M/T or 4WD until 1983, F250/350 only. All 1983/97's F250/350's came w/a hydraulic clutch.

1971/73 429/460, 1974/78 460, some 1979 460: The block casting number is D1VE-6015-AB or -AB1 or -AB2

Mid-year 1979, FoMoCo changed the 460, has a weighted spacer. The block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB

The harmonic balancer, flywheel (flexplate) are specific to this casting number. This was a running changeover, so there's no before/from serial numbers/production dates.

Only F150/350's & Econolines are affected, as 1978 was the last year a Passenger Car came with a 460.

460: 1968/78 Lincoln/Continental Marks / 1972/76 Thunderbird / 1973/78 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars // 1973/76 F100 / 1973/79 F250/350 / 1975/79 F150 / 1975/97 E250/350 / 1983/97 F250/350.

I'ld just build a good 400 and do a straight swap and re-use my accy mounts, etc. Some good TM Pistons and you'ld easily more than double what a stock 351m has.

I wouldn't waste my money rebuilding a 351M/400. My brother rebuilt his 400 and it wasn't 6,000 miles it cracked the #4 cylinder wall. Not sure where the OP is getting his motor or what kind of money he is looking to put into it, but even a mildly built 460 will by far out perform a 400, so why not spend the extra money and be satisfied?
