Motor swap in 77 F250 4x4

Just curious as to which one was a better all around motor. Currently I drive my truck to and from work and occasionally weekend trail riding and mild mudding. I'm just tired of my 351M. I was told the 460 would bolt up to my transmission and I would just need to change out the mounts not sure about the Windsor though.

The rear end of the block bolt pattern is the same on the 351m , 400 and 460. I have replaced 351m with a 460 a couple of times, much better engine i think. The 351w is an altogether different engine and would need more changes to work. 460 will need different mounts and mount stands i believe, mine was not a 4x4 , so i will leave that to the 4x4 experts.

Theres a lot more involved than changing the motor mounts with the 460. You have an early and late 460, early ones you have to use a 390 flywheel, and unless you get parts from L&L or someother place, its hunt and pick. Mounts will need to be made for the 351w too, but all clutch parts are easy to find.

If I were you, I would definitely go with the 460. I just did the 351M to 460 swap and would definitely do it again. There is very good product support specifically for this swap (bronco graveyard, L and L, etc) and while the 460 is not cheap to build when compared to a smallblock chevy, its worth it. Plus, you already have the bellhousing and tranny.

460 not available with a M/T or 4WD until 1983, F250/350 only. All 1983/97's F250/350's came w/a hydraulic clutch.
1971/73 429/460, 1974/78 460, some 1979 460: The block casting number is D1VE-6015-AB or -AB1 or -AB2
Mid-year 1979, FoMoCo changed the 460, has a weighted spacer. The block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB
The harmonic balancer, flywheel (flexplate) are specific to this casting number. This was a running changeover, so there's no before/from serial numbers/production dates.
Only F150/350's & Econolines are affected, as 1978 was the last year a Passenger Car came with a 460.

I wouldn't waste my money rebuilding a 351M/400. My brother rebuilt his 400 and it wasn't 6,000 miles it cracked the #4 cylinder wall. Not sure where the OP is getting his motor or what kind of money he is looking to put into it, but even a mildly built 460 will by far out perform a 400, so why not spend the extra money and be satisfied?
