99 5.4l no start issue. may be fuel pump?

Been a while since iv been on here. Just now had a problem with my SD. Went to Walmart yesterday. After a horrible shopping experience, went to leave. Truck cranked but wouldn't start. Tried for 30 min. After a tow truck driver came to help (AAA) the truck started right up. I had him haul my truck to my house anyways for fear the fuel pump was on its last leg. After We got to my house truck started right up Again and has been since then.
I borrow a fuel pressure guage from Autozone. Tried to hook it up to the shrader valve on the fuel rail. It stripped out a little No reading on the guage. So I hooked it up in line BEFORE the fuel filter. Guage still had no reading. It still read zero psi. So i went back to Autozone. Got a new guage. Hooked it up. Now when I turn the key on it is 22 psi. Then when I start the motor its 34 psi.
My question is, is that the correct psi comming out of the fuel tank. Does that seem low? The trick has been starting up since that no start problem happened yesterday.

Is my fuel pump weak. On its way out? Wandering if I should chance it and try to drive it. Has anyone experienced a fuel filter getting clogged or water in gas acting like this?
When I was at Walmart, I got some engine start spray. It started for about 20 seconds them died. After that, the tow service came and truck has been acting normal since.

I had the same exact happen on my Mustang Gt with the 4.6 v8. My wife drove it home from a trip at the beach and no start, just crank and crank. The dealer wanted $800 to drop the tank and put in the fuel pump. Said iy was a 4 hr job. I bought the pump and not even done this before, had it done in 45 min even with a half tank of fuel. No more problems. On a separate note, the crank shaft sensor went out and did the same thing. It would only crank. Towed it to the dealer and it fired right up. A small oil leak made the crank shaft sensor short out. But I think its the pump, they are notorious for that.

According to my shop manual, fuel pressure should be:

Engine Running: 28-45 psi
Key On Engine Off: 35-45 psi

If it tries not to start again, you might try banging on the fuel tank while someone else cranks the engine. Sometimes the fuel pump will stick if the truck's been sitting for a while. Beating on the tank might free up the pump and get you back on the road. I'd still probably look at changing the pump, though.

If u didn't change the filter when the pumps started using ethanol that could cause the filter to stop up...for money reasons I would start there...but no promises...seen a lot of older cars and trucks do this. As far as changing fp just drop tank with very lil gas in it and besure to unhook filler and fuel lines before letting it fall.

I replaced the fuel pump and still no start!! I really am at a loss here. I poked the shrader valve on the fuel rail and fuel sprays out. Still won't start! What should I check next??
Oh , I changed the fuel filter 2 years ago and I changed the fuel pump relay when I put the new pump in this weekend. Please help!

Ok one more thing to add. When the truck sits for a hour or two and cools down, it starts right up. Could this problem be a sensor?

Ok I'm thinking about replacing the crank position sensor. What do you all think?

So when you turn the key to run do you hear the pump for 2 sec's?
If so the pump is running..Nice to know if you have spark or not..
I have heard of PCM's going bad. Give it a small shot of start fluid that will eliminate spark..
Usually is you have a crank/cam sensor go bad you will get a code...Check and clean MAF..

Yes I hear the pump come on. And there is fuel getting to the rails. There is no code. 2 weeks ago same problem happened. I sprayed start spray in intake. It ran for 10 seconds then died. Then I tried to start it and it started right up. I'm guessing because the engine was cold. It has not started only when the engine was warm.

Now the truck runs great. Starts normal. It's very random when it wont start. So it still may be the pcm?

Still could be fuel. You are going to have to check to see if you hear the pump next time it doesn't start..Starting on starter fluid means no fuel possibly.

I could hear the pump kick on when the truck didn't start today. I also poked the shrader valve and gas sprayed out.
