I have always changed the oil in a new vehicle early the first time. This is an old tale about the break in oil. I can't find anything in the manual that says this. It also says to change the oild every 7000 miles. I have never gone over 3300. I use this because it runs 3300, 6600, 10,000, 13300, 16600. 20000. Best for an old mans memory.
What do you guys do with your new Ecoboost. I will use the Ford oil.

 

I would recommend doing what the manual says.

I honestly used to do 3k oil changes, and thats all fine and well, but i realized that it was a waste of money.

I personally do between 5-7k oil changes on my 5.4l with just shy of 250k on the clock.

My 5.0 mustang gets it at 5k religiously because i get bored with it.

The eboost is nothing special from any other motor when it comes to the lubrication system, it is proned to the same problems with contamination and debris. A good filter will help.


If you use good oil/filter, regular oil changes at 5k would not be an issue.

Oil doesn't actually go bad. It gets dirty and the additive package will break down. And when that happens is based on how much load the engine oil has seen as well as temperature.

Someone will post more info directly answering your question, but i just wanted to let you know that its not an exact science and that its not as big of deal as a lot of people make it out to be.

 

I did my first oil change early just for peace of mind. I'm also doing my regular oil changes a bit earlier than what the manual calls for. I've seen results from people who have sent Ecoboost oil samples away for testing. Their results showed some fuel dilution, not real dangerous levels but the longer the oil change intervals the more fuel dilution there will be. It's not uncommon to see some fuel dilution from direct injection engines and also turbocharged engines. It may not hurt to go to 7k intervals but I'm more comfortable going with around 4k-5k intervals on mine. I don't put tons of miles on mine so the cost of more frequent changes isn't a big deal to me.

 

My 2011 eco manual says to go by the oil life meter, or 10,000 which ever comes first....

 

That's what mine says as well. Additionally, it states that of the oil life monitor fails then default to a 5K change cycle.

So, my questions now are: Does the 2013 manual say to dump at 7K religiously? Or, dump at 7K cycles if the OLM fails?

If any of the above questions are yes answers, will the 2011 / 2012 trucks be affected by the change?

 

I just went to Ford.com and put in I had a 2013 F150 6cyl gas with 20K miles, normal driving... It said next interval due at 30K. and then this:

SO, Im thinking 2013 has same verbage as my 2011.

EDIT: Also looked at 2013 manual on line and it states to expect the meter to alert you at 7500 - 10000 miles.

 

I'll have to read. I listened to my dealer and he said 7000 miles. I do not like the notices coming up on vehicles. Does this indicators go on milage or condition of oil. If they operate on condition of oil it is too much risk for me trying to save a $50.00 oil change every 6 months.

 

Dealerships ALWAYS recommend more oil changes than the manufacturer. They make money on the oil change, they get a chance to upsell you on other services, plus they get you in looking at the new models.

Don't trust your dealer to have your best interests at heart, they don't.

 

I changed my oil early at 1,000 miles, and I'm glad I did. The factory fill was extremely thin and looked dirty as can be. Dropped in some Mobil 1 Extended Life and it looks much better with 2,300 mi on the new oil. I plan to follow my oil life indicator unless and until I find a reason not to.

 

5W-30 will look thin anyway. I hope you stayed with this weight in the Mobil 1.

 

The oil life monitor in my Ecoboost has been telling me to change the oil at 9000 miles....which I've done each time. At just over 25,000 miles, I'll soon be at the 27,000 mark for the next change. I've had 0 problems with this truck and it hasn't been at the dealership since the day I brought it home new.

 

This topic has come up in another thread before...but if you are asking me I would change the FIRST oil change at 200 miles. Yes that's right I did say 200 miles. The reason I will do that is because I want to remove those metal shavings. There is no way I would leave them in my motor for 5,000 miles or more on the first oil change!!

Of course there will be people thinking that is crazy and a waste of money, that the oil filter will remove the metal particles . That's ok because everyone will do what they feel is best with their truck...but with mine an early oil change on the most crucial oil change of them all THE FIRST ONE IMO is well worth the money.

 

Yes, I did. This isn't the first vehicle I've had with 5W-30, and the factory fill was definitely looking thinner than any I've ever seen. My brother, a Ford Service Tech, agrees that the factory fill usually LOOKS thinner than normal... but can't explain it. We both attribute it to either a "break-in" oil, or possibly a by-product of engine break-in.

 

Sounds like you're almost as **** as me. I did my first oil change around 500 miles and I held a magnet under the oil while it was draining. I didn't find anything at all on the magnet, except for oil.

 

That mental picture was great! However I could totally see myself doing the same thing
