Hi smueller901,
I know nothing about trucks prior to 1953 but I have had at least six 53 - 56 Ford or Mercury trucks all of which were Canadian built. How ever my 56 Merc C.O.E. is a Detroit built truck. All of these trucks have (had) the vin number stamped on the top of the right frame rail mid way between the running board brackets under the cab. If you are taking the cab off I advise you to look very carefully on both the right and left sides at this location. It's worth a good look. If the number is there on a 53 there is a possibility that it is there on a 49 or 50.
I have never read or heard any one mention the numbers being in this location before but I could go out behind my shop and show these numbers to any one that wanted to see them. I have three bare frames sitting there. With a good light and mirror I could probably find this hidden number on my 56 C.O.E.
Good luck, no harm in looking.

Hi Steve,
Sounds like you got a lot of good advice from the folks here. I can sympathize as I am dealing with some title-related DMV headaches myself. Long story short, I have all the paperwork for my 1949, I just can't get the DMV or CHP around here to help me get the truck back on the road.
One other legal option you have is to do a frame swap. Basically, if you truly believe that your truck is not stolen, you could buy a legal, titled frame and use your truck as the parts truck, then junk the VIN-less frame at the end. PM me if you are interested in going this route.
best of luck!

It showed up right away when I had the frame sand blasted. My glove box door has the tag on the inside that has the vin on it too. My truck was stock and partly disassembled when I got it. It's been on hold for quite some time now. Too many other things with more priority. Damn! It's cold today.
