Water pump is going...have some q's for replacement

1988 F-150 ext cab, short box. 302/AOD.

Okay, I noticed cooling beginning to leak a considerable amount from the front of the ride...it isn't the hoses as they are all new (even the ones that go to the TB) and also a new 4 core radiator w/ cap.

So...I figure at about 105K my OE water pump is beginning to go. I was looking at a high flow replacment:

Flow Kooler - no. 1660
Milodon - no. 16233

Does anyone run one of these? With a 180* thermostat? With the additional flow, would it be smarter to stick with a 195* thermostat? Any problems?

Thanks!

I'm running the Flow Kooler 1660 in my '93 Mustang GT 5.0, and have been very happy with it. It's been in there about two years now and I haven't had any problems with it. I noticed a drop in temps by putting it in too, even with the underdrive pulleys I installed when I changed the water pump.

I think I'd stick with the recommended thermostat whatever you do. The computer needs to see proper engine temps for best engine operation.

Stick with the 195 t-stat as the increased flow will cause a noticable drop in temp as well as a longer warm-up time.

I would definitely stick with the 192 t-stat. I would also suggest a Motorcraft water pump. A stock engine doesn't need the extra flow, so I would go for dependability.

Why do you want the high flow. If you cool fine now why go high flow. Do they take more hp to spin with stock pulleys or are they intended to make up for underdrive pulleys?

Thumbs up Water pump is going...have some q's for replacement

You can get a Ford pump from Diversified for $42 +s/h - Part #M-8501-C50. I think mine was $51 to my door.

That pump is more for a Mustang, but fits our truck 5.0 either with a slight modification to the backing plate, or reusing the backing plate from the stock pump. I put one on my '90 (5.0) back before T'Giving, and haven't had a bit of trouble out of it.
