I painted mine in (in pieces) the driveway (where it sits in my avatar). It was a tossup between best lighting, bugs, wind, overspray all over my shop, concentrated fumes (I wore a respirator, but...), bugs, cost etc. The paint job will never impress anybody, but I'm OK with it and that's all that matters to me. I also painted my 94 S-10 and 88 Fiero to work on my technique first. Amazingly, great color sanding and buffing make up for a lot of those errors. Total cost in paint for all 3 vehicles was under $600, plus I now have some skills I previously didn't possess.
