2001 "special service" Excursion - for sale, but have some questions
Been looking for the "right" excursion for a while and thought this one must be a typo with the low miles - 2001 4x4 Ex with 66K miles on on 7.3L asking $21500. I just figured it was XLT but then noticed the XLT "special service" description. According to the place selling it, it was a municipal vehicle but not police or fire. He belives it to have been from a road crew, surveyors or similar.
Cant believe the miles, and I can even live with the XLT cloth, but upon closer inspection there are some challenges to make it more "family friendly"...namely the third row. There is not one! I have an old EB black and tan third row seat, which I thought would be an easy drop in, but then notice the holes are not in the floor, and there is no third row seatbelts either. Anyone have experience in thie "special service" package? The black vinyl floor covering goes over the drop downs for where the seat latches. The indentions are there, but if I cut them out, will the pins be in place to grab the latch or not? Also, how feasible is it to add the 3rd row seatbelts? Looks like the armrests are the same, where the factory belts go down/behind them, but would have to add externall or disassemble the side panels to add - and how to guess at the cost?? I am thinking of pursuing this, but don't want to underestimate the cost of adding what we need to make the third row viable.
Actually, my preference would be capt chairs and third row now, as I have 3 kids and even the second row middle only has a lap belt. Shoulder harness is important to me, having been in couple bad accidents in my life. Here is a link to the Ex, if it posts. Welcome to chime in on what think it should sell for also, as I see these prices all over, esp for 7.3 L under 100K mile.

there is a kit online to add the seat buckets for it to drop into. i've been going to get one for awhile since my expedition which uses the same buckets did not come with a 3rd row either. i'll see if i can find the link for you it was not very expensive. the seat belts could not be that hard to add i dont think. i'm sure the mounting points are there just not punched through.
looks like a very nice low mile truck! they are out there i just stumbled on a amazing '02 xlt V10 with 27k on it. wish i could buy another.

I have no doubt that it is possible to get a third row seat in there, but at what cost who knows. I looked locally when considering one that was missing the 3rd row seat and they were selling for around $400.
Seat belts were about $90 each from the junk yard and you would have to cut holes for them.

Thought this picture might help you out, if they will let you pull the carpet back and feel around I bet you could check and see if the channels are under there and just need cut out or not. You can see the ribs and I think get a good reference for exactly where to check from this photo. If not then if you do get it this might help when you go to do the install, also shows the seat belt locations.

cool photo
Thanks for the photo, pretty cool. Although part of the problem is there is no carpet to pull back on this model, has the hard vinyl/plastic floor covering that can't pull back. There are indentations for the back (latching) part but don't see any for the front hooks of the seat.
The seat belts seem like more of a hurdle to me. Getting benind those large plastic panels to anchor, etc... Unless there is an aftermarket option, not likely.
I don't want to ask about punching holes thru unless we would get closer on a trade/purch offer. $21500 is not realistic (to me) even with these miles, unless it was a Limted with bucket seats, 3rd row, dvd etc.... I'm thinking this thing should sell for $19k or under with the special service pack challenges.

keep looking you will find the right one for you. I looked for 5 months before I found mine, two plane rides and a 1700 mile drive and she's sitting pretty in my driveway. I'm really glad I decided to buy from Texas, not only is my X rust free I also got to meet a great FTE member who checked my X over from bumper to bumper.
It cost me $260 for the flight, $330 for diesel, and about $500 for hotels and meals on the way back.
I think I got a good deal on it at $17K for an 2001 4x4 7.3L with 141K miles

No rear heat and air! that would be a deal breaker for me. unless you don`t care much for the passenger in the rear? LOL I would pass on it!
I didn`t know they never came without the rear heat/air and no rear seat or even without the floor strikers! very interesting!
I do believe that the strikers are there. and also the seatbelt anchors should be behind the panels. that is the way they usually build them when it comes to the sheetmetal! yes 21K is a bit much for a stripped down XLT even with the low miles and the diesel! I`de say closer to $16-17K and even then you have no rear heat and air, can you tell I`m stuck on that?!

I would keep looking. Just my two cents, but here's a reality 66k and 21 grand.... 66k of driven miles from a surveyor crew.... you think they turned it off when they did their work? They likely left it running, running for hours a day. Running is as good as mileage if not worse, all that idle time and who knows how many REAL miles is actually on it? Then add the rear seat issues, lack of heat and air, and you have yourself a no deal truck. Keep looking you can do better.
How about even this one-

Or even this one-

Are those wheels factory? I would be curious of the idle hours based on all the holes on the dash from equipment, maybe a laptop mount or something was added. Also note the wear on the brake pedal. It also may have had a rear cage in it seeing the holes in the ceiling. Too many questions ant too much money. Batteries are from 08 so are probably in need of replacement soon. It also seems too clean..
