Help in selecting TT - F150 Fx4 3.73 Eco

Hey FTErs,

For those who tow TT's, just wanted some opinions on towing. I have a '11 F150 Eco crew w/ 3.73. No HD pkg, no Max tow pkg, so max payload is ~1,400. Have found a camper that dry-weighs 7,450, GVWR of 9,975, hitch weight dry of 1,030.
My truck only has 9K miles on it and I love it, so really dont want to trade it for a SD truck. But I think this TT is possibly too heavy.
If anyone had some thoughts about the max Dry weight/GVWR of what is reasonable for my truck, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
TAC

figure 10-15% of trailer gross for the hitch wt. so that puts it at 1,000 lbs..they say 1030 so that is good on that spec.

Look at your reciever...is it rated for 10K or above? My speculation is 12.5K with a tongue wt with a distribution system of around 1300 lbs. Again good there.

Do you have a trailer brake controller? You will need that. If so...good there.

With the trailer you will need a good hitch system to distribute the weight with anti sway control. Easy to purchase with the trailer. Pretty much what everyone has to do at the time of selection.

You don't say 4x4 but I will assume so...4x2 would just be rated higher. 9600-9700 lbs with the tag along. So that will put you slightly over. I think it is a bit of a stretch but if you always stay local then certainly in consideration. Long distances this would not be wise.

Also of consideration is the cooling capacity of the transmission. Do you have a tranny cooler? I would assume so but a quick look at the front end for cooler will confirm.

Here is a link to the specs:

Too heavy. That 1030 is dry hitch, you'll be at 1300+ loaded, leaving nothing for passangers or cargo.

Frankly my biggest concern would be stability, my dads F150 is simmilar but with the 4.6L V8, towing my 24' enclosed every passing car would have the trailer wandering in its lane (semis possibly out of lane if you werent expecting it) and that was with a good WD hitch/sway setup. I will admit the truck has P series tires vs LT but thatd mainly affect ride quality vs stability.

I appreciate the feedback guys.
It is a 4x4. I looked yesterday and I have the 10K hitch.
Guess I should have gone for that max tow package - esp considering I had this truck ordered. Though I do think I have a tranny cooler. I plan on ordering the factory brake controller and putting that in. I've seen some writeups online so that looks doable. Then I think we'll take a look at trailers a bit lighter.

I test drove a 2012 F250 over the weekend. I love the SD trucks. Would really love the options having a superduty would open up, but its just too much truck when I wouldnt be towing. I really didnt expect the ride quality to be so drastically different. It was a real beast though.
