This might not be an issue for you but when I had to replace my 48 hood due to major damage with a 51 hood I found the 51 metal was 18 guage and my original hood was 16 guage.

I am sure if you knew the hood was the wrong year you know the bed is the wrong year... Just hoping to save you some cash on parts if not... Looks like a 48-early50 bed.

Make sure you document the drop if you keep straight axle... I am looking to do the same thing eventually. If you know of a good source of info on how to do it I would like to see... The info I have seen is for drop axles and spindles.

The rear is always the easy part... The more I think about it the more of a deal you got... makes me feel taken on mine when I had thought I had got a good deal.

I didn't know the bed was the wrong year. It doesn't bother me, but can you think of any issues it might cause? Will the boards be different? This is good stuff to know when ordering parts. Ha. Thanks!

Found the same when I started restoring the Magic Air heaters The heat dissapation / separator pan under the heater core in the '48-'50 Magic air heaters is 16 Ga. while the pan in the '51 / '52 is 18 ga. You can actually feel the difference in weight . Ole' Henry saving a buck !!

I envy the space you have for all this. Someday I'll be able to tackle a big challenge like that.

Yeah, you can never have enough garage space, but I like my setup. We are looking to move soon, but part of the trouble I'm having is finding the kind of place we want AND the right garage space.

If you want a dropped front axle then send it here...

Dropped axle Axles Axel

Takes about 6 weeks, and he does a GREAT job. Cost me $400 for the axle stretch and new kingpins (installed) plus about $80 shipping round trip.

Here's a pic of the front axle installed with the front clip sitting on the frame. The motor and transmission are installed, and the wheels are 15 inch with P215/70R15 tires. I also have reversed-eye main leaf springs in the front, available from www.classic-haulers.com.

There are no dropped spindles for the beam axle. You can use the same techniques as the 53-56, removing every other leaf, using lowering springs, use reversed eye springs, use extended shackles, use dropped axle. The link already provided is dropped axles done right. You can drop the front until the frame will scrape going over speed bumps and the bumper will scoop up road kill less than a week old!
You can't flip the front axle to the top of the springs, but you can on the rear, but you will need to C notch the frame.
