I recently bought a 19971997 f150 extended cab lariat edition 4x4 with an automatic tranny. The guy that had it before me cut the old muffler off of it and just welded a straight pipe in its place. I still have both catalytic converters on the truck. My question is would I benefit from purchasing a muffler to put back on this truck. Something like a flowmaster or similar? I only get about 14-15 MPG right now with the 5.4l motor. I'm not looking for major increases but any little bit helps.

Also is there anyone that could tell me how I can tell if I have a keyless entry option?

welcome to the ford world! i my self own a 1997 f150 but mine is the 4.6l. is for the exhaust im not sure im only 16 so i im still learning this stuff. I do know to check the keyless entry you have to cycle the key from off to the position right before you start it where all the dash lights turn on 8 times fast. after you do that if the locks cycle them selves then you have the keyless entry capability. Good luck with your new ford

I don't think that re-installing a muffler is going to clobber milage that much. At 14-15 mpg for a 5.4L powered 4X4 you're doing ok.

Keyless entry - if there's a black strip on the driver's door, with numbered "pads" you have the option.

The fuel economy isn't horrible... I was just wondering if I would get an extra mile or two per gallon by adding a muffler

Nope. You may gain a little low end torque though.
