Question 1987 Ford 6.9l

So I'm in the market for another IDI! this will be my third I've owned, I found this one locally on Craigslist. ford idi veg oil diesel 1987 duelly

The guy said there is no rust on the truck, c6 tranny, 4x6(dually) extended cab 6.9l with 126k original, the absolute lowest they guy said he would take is 2500, he also said he had brand new injectors/IP that come with the truck. He said he'd like to get 3000 for it, personally from the pictures and the near 30 minute conversation about idi's leads me to believe he knows his stuff. The truck is only 45 minutes away. Thinking of when I get the money together to go take a serious look at it. I'm doing wood again this year and I need a 4x6 hauler that can tow 12k lbs worth of wood plus another 1.5k lbs of wood in the bed. What do you guys think from my description, and the add? Think shes worth forking the money over for?

Looks like a pretty nice old truck...i think it will do what you want it to. how much highway driving do you do? the only downside is the 3 speed auto which sucks on the highway

Old Truck

Hello, Make sure to look very closely at that truck...Yes it has dually wheels, however...to me...that truck sure looks like an F-250 conversion...meaning...the only thing that may be 1 ton about it is the rear-end...it sure does look like an F-250 XLT...be careful...check the door stickers...if it is a conversion, there should be a sticker ... better yet...get the VIN # and check it...

As far as price goes...this is just me...I wouldn't give more than $1800 no matter what...

It does look like a TTB front end. Not a deal killer but a D60 would be much better.

If that truck is a 4 wheel drive, it is a conversion of some sort, as Ford idi not offer an extended cab F350, dual rear wheel 4X4, with a box untill the superduty. Either it is a cab & chasis with a box installed, or a F250 with dualls installed. From the pics, it looks like a 2wd as it looks to be setting to low for a 4x4.

Some folks see "veg oil" as a big red flag. I'm not necessarily one of them, but you could use it to negotiate a lower price.

Why would it be a big red flag? IDI's can run just about anything with the right mods, if i'm not mistaken. Reason I'm looking at it is because I know the 6.9l motor and the legendary c6 trans. All of my previous trucks had them. I know for a fact is a dually conversion, Since mentioned before they did not make them stock those years. Its really low miles and the body from the pictures and such is clean, that and the gentlemen said he has some extra 6.9l motors, 2 infact.

Again, it's not how I personally feel, but there are those who say that any veggie oil will ruin an engine, and it's especially bad if it's not heated to the correct temperature or if the engine is started up on it. If the truck has a good conversion kit, probably there's nothing wrong at all, but if he just poured veggie oil in the tank without heating it, I'd stay away.

I'd assume, since he has the 100 us gal fuel cell it has the right kit. But ya never know!

I'd just ask him what sort of heat exchanger the tank's got, if it's a homebrew conversion or if he bought one. If he dropped some serious money on the conversion, he'll be happy to tell you about it.
