ford ranger milage vs f150 milage

I will add that my 07 4X4 XLT F150 had the 5.4 V8, 3:55 gears and compared to my 04 Ranger FX4 with the 4.0 V6 and 4:10 gears the gas miliage was similiar. It's worth noting the extra weight of the FX4 package (skid plates, different gearing, etc.) over a XLT or Edge 4X4 with 4.0 V6 MAY provide a 1-3 MPG difference.
Again I had a '99 "Sport" 4X4 with 3.0 V6, lesser gear ratio, no "off-road" extras like skid plates...and the power and MPG with 3.0 sucked.
The 95 "Splash" 2WD with 4.0 got great MPG (no 4X4, fiberglass body) and power, but was TERRIBLE in snow and wet conditions, even with weight in the bed.
I will never buy a 2WD truck again.
Hence, my current FX4 F150 with iffy MPG...but it's worth it :-)

I never bothered to figure out the gas mileage for the ranger I had but I can give my thoughts. I had a 2005 xlt 4x4 ranger supercab I bought new and now have a 2007 f-150 supercab that I bought used, I also ocassionally drive my dad's 2004 ranger xlt 4x4 supercab. I use my truck for part time landscaping, mowers in truck sometimes and towing a small trailer. For my needs there is nothing the f-150 does that the ranger can't. The ranger isn't as comfortable or as roomy and it's harder for me to see out the windows. But the on the positive side it's easier to park. I paid $2000 more for a 2 year old used f-150 than I did for a brand new ranger. The gas mileage I think is similiar with an edge for the ranger. I get 10 or 11 in my f-150 but a ton of stop and go. Not sure what I would get in your situation but I plan on buying my dad's ranger if he ever gets rid of it as a back up to my f-150. I like them both.

I have owned them all. Rangers both 4x2 and 4x4, F150's both 4x2 and 4x4. If you want MPG the best is a 4x2 Ranger with the 4 cyl and 5speed. My 99 Ranger 4x2 Supercab with the 2.5L and 5speed gets 21MPG stop light to stop light and 27-28mpg highway at 60mph. With good tire and 200# in rear of bed I have never had a problem in the snow. I buy my water softner salt in November for the year and use that as weight. In spring I take it out and use it for the softner.
I also have a 2011 Ranger 4x2 Super cab with the 4.0V6 and 5speed. I have been averaging 23.5-25mpg on highway at 60mph. The 2011 has Traction control and roll stability control. That along with 200# weight in back have been fine.
The age of the truck will determine MPG. If you are looking at older F150's 2004 and older, don't expect to average 18. You may hit that on a rare trip with good conditions but you will most likely average 14-15 mpg over all. Also Ranger 4x4's overall MPG average is much lower than the 4x2's and if you need auto trans that is also a big hit.
My 1988 Ranger 4x4 Supercab 2.9V6 5speed that I bought new, got 18mpg delivering pizza and would get 22mpg highway at 60mph. I used to average 20mpg overall for year.
If you are going to dish out for a new truck.
The 2012 F150 4x2 with traction control and the 3.7V6 will get close to a Ranger in MPG. The highway rating is 23mpg compared to my2011 Ranger 4.0V6 rating of 21mpg (that I beat at 23.5-25mpg).

But then, having a modified 400 that weighs more than a Mini Cooper might have something to do with it...

Alrighty. thanks for all of your info guys. Alot of help. I believe ive made the decision on the ranger because it fits my needs better and while give me better (if only a little) milage. Now the decision is 3.0L or 4.0L also 4x4 or 4x2. Ive heard there isnt tooo much point getting a 3.0L. Id appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

well, while the 3.0 is a good, reliable engine, its not much better on gas than a 4.0, and the 4.0 does seem to be more powerful in the ranger chassis to warrant going with one vs a 3.0 (ive only just read about 3.0's in rangers, only ever drove one in a taurus chassis) if you dont need 4x4, then dont get it, i did fine for years with a 2wd truck , good tires & 200# in the bed. but one bad week of winter with a 4x4 will make you want to always have it! i also like having low range for backing trailers or other low-speed situations (like pulling up out of a boat ramp) helps keep the clutch alive a little longer! i love the supercab config, lets you keep stuff up front in the cab, i have a small tool bax behind my drivers seat, the longer wheelbase rides nice. only drawback is the supercab only comes as a shortbed. ive often thought about getting a junkyard longbed & doing some cutting & splicing, make my own longbed supercab ranger! be alot of work for 1 foot of bed space though!
