This is prolly a 1 page thread at most
Haha, you're right about retirement. We are really hoping for a full ride or at least a really good scholarship. She has already been given a full ride to UT, but wants to attend school out of state. The selfish side of me wants her to go to UT for two reasons. For one, she would be much closer and I could visit more often with less expense. Secondly, UT is a good school and it's FREE! Free is my favorite kind.
Free is the way to go. I've had both my undergrad and master's paid for and let me tell ya, no debt is the ONLY way to go when it comes to college. Remember, unless you go to a few select schools, engineering degrees are 5 years now...not 4.
Working in Bio Med is really a great field currently. The engineer fields are quite strong and with the current education trends in America, I don't see them getting more competitive anytime soon.
Steve, I'm excited for her to be interested in such great paths and will support her choices to the best of my abilities, but I wholeheartedly agree about free being the way to do it. UT has a great medical school, as do Texas A&M and Baylor. My son attended and graduated A&M with a less ambitious degree, but he took out student loans to cover the costs that his mother and I couldn't. As soon as he graduated, I took over the loans and paid them right off so they wouldn't be hanging over his head for years to come. With my daughter being valedictorian, I was almost counting on free college for her, and was looking forward to being able to invest more toward my retirement or buy more beer, but if she insists on going out of state, there is no guarantee of anything but full-priced tuition and my beer may have to wait. I just told her when she gets rich and famous, to remember her Daddy!

Even with a "full ride", expenses mount up quickly. They (Universities) have so much unseen charges that aren't covered. But, it's your youngans, so ain't much we can do. Just glad I've been blessed to be able to cover the extra expenses. My daughter will be finished with college this year, she's already doing intern work at the NBC affiliate in New Orleans WDSU, she's producing some of the different parts of their daily newscast. (Her last assignment was parade coverage during Mardi Gras, rough assignment). Anyway, good luck to your daughter, I know the mentioned schools have alot more prestige, but she'll get an outstanding education at UT or TAM, great schools from what I understand, especially in the field you mentioned.
Thanks Mitch. I'm sure she will do well at whatever she decides to do and wherever she decides to go. I understand about the uncovered expenses, but to be tuition, room and board, and book free, will be a huge break in what would otherwise be extremely expensive.
Audio/visual production are a hobby of mine. I would enjoy a field like your daughter is in. Do you get to hang out with her now and then on the job? I bet that would be neat!

Yes, I would enjoy it. She did some work for the WWII museum in New Orleans in the AV department when they had a special presentation this past year. Of course I was offshore....
