I decided to install a Mustang II front end and Thunderbird IRS. Everything is just about done but I was questioning where I should place the generator, valves, and tank for the air ride system. I already removed the gas tank and am going to build a custom one for the rear and I was thinking about putting my air tank where the gas tank used to go and place the valves and generater next to where the battery goes. The frame of the truck will still be lower than all of the components. Any ideas or thoughts before I start building a box for the generator and valves?

 

I thought you were talking about installing airbags - as in the things that blow up in your face if you run into another vehicle. Now that would be a tricky mod. OK, back to the regularly scheduled program.

 

If by generator you really mean air compressor, I'd have that out of and as far away from the cab as possible to keep the noise level inside to a minimum. The rest of the components can go anywhere that's handy.

 

Yes, Air compressor...sorry was working on my generator earlier today and had it stuck in my head. I was hoping some people who have installed bags on their trucks would have some pictures/advice as where they put there components.

 

The space where your gas tank went under the cab is a perfect place for all of your air ride stuff.
Unless your cycling the air bags constantly or have an air leak somewhere in the system, the compressor will only operate every once in a while to maintain tank pressure so compressor noise in the cab should be minimal, especially if you have some good sound dampening mat under your interior carpet.
I just finished a 50 F1 and the air system is frame mounted right under the driver seat and you don't hear the compressor run unless the windows are down. I guess thats a testament for dyna-mat which covers the cab floor under the carpet.

I did similar on my 55. the air tank is under the passenger door, frame mounted, and the Viair compressor is frame mounted under the bed, in the front passenger corner, behind the edge of the running board.
one air line runs to the tank and one air line runs back towards the rear bags. the tank drain is mounted towards the front of the truck,
almost even with the door hinge.

the electric fuel pump is also frame mounted on the inner side of the boxed frame right there too. So on fresh startup (after a week), you might hear something, but its not really noticable. I have a tiny leak that I haven't found, but its days to leak down.
