yakima rack wind whistle solutions?

Had factory rack, was a piece of ****. Took it off and threw it away. Got a canoe. Needed a good rack. Bought a yakima rack with the round bars and mounted them as far apart as I could, one all the way at the front, one at the back. Looks great, works fantastic, very sturdy. Only problem is now about 60 mph or so I get a low pitched whistle that is very loud.

Don't want to get one of those yakima spoiler things, really. Has anyone used a yakima rack and put the bars in different positions, maybe found a position that would eliminate most of the whistle? I realize its always going to be a bit noisier with a rack on top, but I'd like to avoid having to take the bars off when its not in use. I like how they look, I don't have anywhere to keep them, and its just less work to leave them up there.

My old four door did the same thing. I stretched a ratchet strap between them to keep them from vibrating in the wind. Might not be an option with the distance you have.

I don't think that its vibrating, I think its just the way the bars are up there, with wind flowing over the windshield and swirling around them. I don't know. they are kind of a pain to move around. My pathfinder used to have arrows on the rack and it said "position crossbars here when not in use to minimize wind noise and maximize mpg" or something in the owners manual.

Yeah. I bought a complete setup off a guy that had it mounted to his truck cap, after checking with yakima to verify that it would fit the factory racks. Its got "rail rider" towers with the type 1 mounting system, and it had 2 54" bars with caps. For $62. Pretty good deal. He had used bolts to mount it to his cap, so it came with the original manual, and both type 1 and type 2 mounting systems still sealed in their bags in the original box.
