7.3 - 6.9 starter swap

well ive finally got time to get the old 7.3 out of the truck and im looking at a 6.9 to buy . The 6.9 starter is bad and wanted to swap my 7.3 starter in to it to get it running before buying it. So my 7.3 is mated to a t-19 4spd and the 6.9 is mated to a 5sp i believe. will my starter fit to get it cranking.

it should fit, as the engines are the same. but if you want to be doubly sure, go to a parts store website such as oreillyauto.com, and look up starters for both vehicles. if the part numbers match, that confirms it

It will fit.

It may look a little different, are there are a few different designs for the starters on these trucks, but they are all interchangeable.

You should have no problem. I've swapped starters from my zf5 7.3 to my t19 6.9 before without issue. If you are still concerned the best way to confirm correct fit and operation would be to count the gear teeth on both starters - if they are the same then you are golden. You might see some difference in the body of the starter/nose piece but that won't matter.

Good luck

I have to say that you guys are wrong, when i swapped the 84 6.9 in....the starter that was in it could not be used. The T-19 has a different flywheel than the ZF-5. It wouldnt work for me for the life of me....i tried and tried and tried...

today i swapped the 90 7.3 starter to the 87 6.9 it fit perfectly .the 87 f350 4x4 6.9 has a zf5 and the 90 7.3 was bolted to a t-19 in my 87 f350 4x4. I counted the teeth on the starters they were both 13 .when i removed the 6.9 starter the nose cone was completely broke off and stuck in the bell housing weird. I had to mess and pry with it to get it loose and out of the bell housing. But it worked great and im going to pull the 6.9 engine and prep it for install in my truck this week.
