Engine replacement cost?

Hey Guys!

So i've read the beginners guide and i feel much better equipped to start this project. I've been trying to figure out a worst case scenario price on this.

In a nut shell the truck i'm thinking about purchasing has a locked up engine. The seller said it was running great when it went in for paint, 6mo later it's seized up. He 'filled' it with diesel until he could get to it. When he took it apart the cylinders are rusted.

So maybe it just needs some TLC and it'll be 'cheap' to fix. But what i need to know is what can i replace it for. It THE original 52 v8 flathead. So i'd try my best to keep it, but if it's not worth keeping then that's just the fact.

I'd figure about $2300 to get the flathead rebuilt. If it "really" was running great 6 months ago, it's hard to believe it has much rust, you may get by with simply disassembling it and cleaning it up.

If you are on a budget, it would be cheaper to find another one running (vs rebuild). Here are a few options:

$500:
1952 Ford Flathead V8 Engine

$700:
ford v-8 flathead motors

$600:
ford v8 flathead engine

$550:
flathead ford

Running in car with c4 tranny adapter $1000:
Running V8 Flathead

I had almost a full turn of play, it was scary. I had the wife turn the wheel back and forth while I looked underneath. I never saw much play in anything, and was certain it was the steering box. I decided to try rebuilding the drag links first since they are so cheap.. They didn't look that worn when i took them apart, but it got 95% of the play out.
