Guess I'm stuck with it.
Now off to NAPA to pick up new fuel pump. Almost afraid to put it in. Giving them a labor bill this time. We'll see what happens.

Check the fuel pump relay, and any other points of failure along the way, a bad connection or relay contact will not give the fuel pump enough amperage and it'll overheat and destroy itself.
I've worked on a few vehicles where someone in the family (or friend) hasn't the money to do the fuel pump the THIRD time, and I find the fuel pump relay is working but gets HOT when the pump is running - meaning it has resistance internally.
Check the inertia switch, connectors, everything... if they are warm/hot to the touch, they are suspect

Thanks Art, did that once, won't hurt to do it again.

George, I would be happy to learn how to do both of those projects... I will anxiously await your detailed youtube videos and the written/illustrated manuals to go with. I promise to watch those in the comfort of my air conditioned living room and let you know my thoughts!

Thanks Rob.
Art, funny thing is the only issue is the rear pump, relay works both pumps, selector switch ok, inertia sw ok. Tank not run dry. Voltage and voltage drop ok. Hesitant to cut and splice wires to measure amperage draw. Original pump still works. Might put it back in if I can fix the sending unit part. I'm tempted (not) to cut a hole in the bed for easier access.
