Strange year on registration

I wonder if any of you may know why my truck registered as a '57. I'm fairly sure it's a '59. Even when i put VIN into DMV site to estimate fees, before I went, it came up '57

Anyway my VIN is:

F10C9D24798

I thought the 9 after the C denoted '59.
Anyhow, thanks for any info someone can give to help me.

Jason, Sounds like a glitch in the system with DMV! The nine does indicate 1959. Did you try to explain this while at DMV.
Does the glove box numbers match the frame numbers. Which numbers did DMV use, was there a title, or bill of sale?

Haha. Good point spurredon. Naw, Teddy, I didn't want to confuse them up there. It seems pretty obvious with the 9. I had the title with me. I haven't checked the frame. I need to find that. The glove box matches the title. Thanks.

Compare the VIN stamped on the Rating Plate with the VIN on the pink slip (title) with the hidden VIN stamped on the frame rail, see if they all match.

If a PO had bought the truck without a title, or if the truck was stolen at some point, someone coulda bought a parts truck, then used its title to register yours, installing its Rating Plate on the A pillar.

Thanks. Is there a best place to start looking on frame? The guy I bought it from story was pretty believable. He's lived on my property, where I work, for over 10 years. Said his dad bought the truck new in 1959. Says he remembered riding in it as a kid. Anyway, the grandfather gave to this Guy's daughter, which I know also, for graduation gift. And title was in her name. She didn't want to keep it because needed money for college expenses. Plus, just wasn't her style; no power steering, etc. Guy knows all about the truck. Engine change, etc. Anyway, sounds believable to me. I will check frame VIN. Thanks.

And, that still wouldn't explain why that VIN came up as a '57.

Sure it could because you broke the first rule when buying an old rolling pile of misery.

NEVER believe a single word a seller claims. Private sellers can lie just as well as used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists!

Find the hidden frame VIN, then compare it with the other two. If it doesn't match, call the CA DMV's 800 number from a pay phone and pass the VIN along to the DMV cluck.

I'll get out there and check in a few. I still don't get how F10C9D24798 could come back as a 1957 F100. Forget the truck. They are simply going off that number. And from everything I've read, the 9 after the C clearly denotes a 1959. I think spurredon hit it on the head as a mistake in DMV system. I will check the frame though. That is a good thing to do anyway.

F10 = F100 / C = 292 2V / 9 = 1959 / D = Dallas TX Assembly Plant / 24798 = 1959 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.

But, if a 1957 title was used to register your truck, the above VIN decode isn't worth diddly do. Even i buzzard bait knows this, doncha Steve.

Worth about as much as diddly squat, only it takes more time to type squat, than do. Time is money, doncha know.

Aha. i haven't thought of that, or even knew it was possible. My ignorance to how titles work. I figured any title they could use would have a VIN on it. As mine did. I didn't think you could just use any VIN you wanted. And, I am not familiar with Texas titles at all. I've only seen Louisiana and California. And, it's been awhile since I've seen a Louisiana one. Well, hell, I may have a '57. I will know as soon as i get off my butt to check that frame. All this being said, If we want to be extremely cynical, we could say they changed the frame as well. Ha, just joking. Thanks for the info.

January 2004, I bought a 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk in NY off ebay. The title was a little scrap of paper, not what I'm used to in CA.

Didn't bother with the DMV, because who needs to stand in long lines with some smelly peeps that don't know what soap is for, prolly wouldn't know how to use it...if they did.

So I went to the SoCal AutoClub office in Whittier. When it was my turn, I was horrified to see that the same dumb cluck that waited on me before, was gonna wait on me again. But this time, I was prepared.

I handed her the title, she said this isn't a title, you'll have to get the correct title from the NY seller.

I told her, take yout mitts, reach under the counter, get that book out that shows facsimilies of every title used worldwide, look in the NY section.

And there it was, an exact facsimile of the same title I had. 10 minutes later, waltzed oughtta there with my CA plates and registration.

Four months before, I'd registered a 1963 Galaxie I'd bought in TX. The same scenario occurred with the same dumb cluck. I asked for a second opinion, another person told the dumb cluck to look in the book that shows all the titles.

Whittier office has now moved to a new location, dumb cluck is his-tor-ee!
