2006 F350 Dually Brake Job

Ok so this week I'm attempting to work on an 06 F350 dually, the guy needs what he thinks to be new front and rear pads and rotors. He told me that the duallys have on the rear a brake disc and brake shoe. From what I've got from the internet is the rear has a rotor and parking brake shoe. But I still haven't got enough information off the internet to feel comfortable doing this job. I've read that the hub needs to come off and also read that it doesn't. He uses this truck for work and can't afford to have it on blocks for more than a few days. He got a quote for $900 and I think i could save him a few hundred. The truck only has 58,000 miles on it so I'm not sure if rotors (or parking brake) need to be replaced as well. I've changed pads and rotors on numerous vehicles but never a dually so I'm wondering what all I need to do and if this is a job i need to buy specialty tools for. thanks for any info.

You will need to pull the axles out to get the rear rotors off. You will need a special socket to get the nut off to pull the axle out. I would pull the tires off the back and have a good look at the rotors. These trucks use the front brakes more then the rear. I bought front and rear rotors for my dually but the rear rotors were in perfect shape after 117,000 miles, so I have them on the shelf till I need them. If you do change the rotors, I would also change the axle seal while you're in there.

It's not a bad job, just takes a little time.

Good luck.

If I do have to take the rotors off are there any tricks or things I should know before doing it that I could screw up? I was told to jack the side your working on higher to keep the fluid from leaking out? Do you think I should have to worry about the parking brake shoe?

Like I said, you will need a special socket that you will need to push on to turn the nut to get the axle off. Everything is pretty much straight forward doing this job. I live in the flat lands so I never use my parking brakes. They were in good shape. If you do this one side at a time, you will not loose any fluid with jacking one side. I didn't loose much fluid with both sides jacked up.
