Front axle dust seal question
I am replacing the 2 axle dust seals on the front end of my truck. Just finished the one side and I have a question about the smaller of the 2 seals, the one up against the axle housing itself.
Is that supposed to rotate with the axle shaft? The one that I havent replaced yet does not but its shot also (in 2 pieces) so that doesnt tell me anything. Just wondering.....
its a 99 f350 4x4 7.3L if you need that info...
Thanks
Frank

Axle Seals
Mine is also a 99 F350 and I had to replace the axle seals due to leaking. I also replaced the dust seals. The dust seals don't do much. Maybe they rotate with the axle and maybe they don't. They are only tight on the axle shaft from the rubber lip and that may make them rotate. Their only purpose is to try and keep junk out of the axle housing. After a while they are shot and just hang there. Not much you can do about it.
I recommend getting the latter design if it isn't too late. They are a little larger in outside diameter and cover the end of the housing better.
Good luck
