It's so loud on the highway, the barn doors rattle like crazy, can't even hear the AM radio on the highway

I would like to put a zf5 behind my 400 m. I've read a few options. What is the best way?

"Yes, it is possible to elongate two bolt holes in the 460 trans to get it to fit the 7.3 but because of the shape of the flange it is not possible to get a 7.3 trans to fit a 460."

Could you explain that a little more please? What is it that makes the 460 able to fit the 7.3 but not the other way? I understand that there's a difference in the bolt pattern. (must be pretty slight difference) thanks

ZF5 ID#

I have 92 f250 4x4 7.3L IDI with a 5 speed trans. It has a tag on it with the #8298711. Another stamped in it is 130730108 with a 44 below it. Can anyone tell me if this is the ZF trans or is possibly the M5R1 or M5R2 trans.

ZF transmissions were only used for F250/350 trucks. a M5R2 would NEVER hold up to the power of the 460/ 7.3

So, this diesel transmission will not work the early 79 year model 460?

To just "Bolt it in", no.

You'd have to get an adapter plate and an input shaft off the 460 setup.

So why not just get the correct transmission to start with?

That'd be a good setup; But just remember the C6 is only a 3 speed. No overdrive.

So out on the highway he's gonna be cranking some relatively high rpm's (2,500-3,100 ish) and that'll drag the MPG down some.

But on the other hand, it's strong, reliable and cheap the rebuild.

With a mildly built 460 .30 over carburated motor. (Haven't chosen the valve train yet) Fuel mileage is already not a consideration. Reliability is. What is the maximum RPM range we should shoot for without damaging the motor? This truck is being put together for small town prowling and weekend mud holes. If it sees any highway it'll be on a trailer. I just want to be sure we are putting together a good combination. Any advice we can get is greatly appreciated. Never done this before.

it is a ZF trans
the mazda transmissions were used on the small gas engines and will not fit on a diesel.

I have 87 6.9+ ZF5 with a bad DMF. I don't really have the money to get a new one. At the local junkyard I found an F350 gas 5sp and a 6.9 4sp. Would either of these flywheels work if I was to swap the clutch as well? Sorry to bug you in here, just need to know thanks

gas no. you need a diesel unit.
and if you get a solid flywheel, you will also need the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing for the solid flywheel. the dual mass stuff is different.

The stock flywheels in the 4sp were single mass if I'm not mistaken. So ur saying that flywheel would work if I also converted with the clutch, plate and bearing as well?
