How bulletproof can a 6.0 be made?

And what upgrades does it take to achieve this? I'm looking at trucks for my father and while I'm leaning toward a gasser I've come across a 2004 6.0 CC LB 4x4 with 120k on the clock for a mere $8500. My dad's budget is 10,000, so this truck would leave about 1500 to do reliability upgrades.

The catch is that neither of my parents are particularly inclined to spend their weekends working on their vehicles - they want everything to work properly without too much attention. So the question is - can a 6.0 be upgraded to the reliability of a 7.3 for 1500? I would be doing the work on it (I am inclined to spend my weekends working on my '01 F250), so that figure only has to cover parts. But to the best of my very limited knowledge, the 6.0 is a very finicky engine. It would be neat to get my father something that powerful, but reliability is the key property here. Am I barking up the wrong tree with a 6.0?
