Gary,
The '87-'91 taillights have a clear section that wraps around the whole bottom of the lens, not just a little window facing rearward.

Go look on LMC or somewhere to see the difference.

Gary, mine look like the top one, with all the pills facing the rear, not the flat panels facing all sides.
I don't know if my Ebay purchase history goes back far enough to find them...

I have not done the 1157's and an electronic flasher....yet.

. Yes, I see the difference. Have you gone to the later lenses? Are they brighter overall?

I was thinking that for this application firing everything to the rear would be best. I'm going to have to look up the lumens on an 1156 as I've found and LED replacement that puts out 88 lumens but don't know how much brighter that is.

My truck IS an '87, it came with the later lenses.

These are the ones in my purchase history.

And, I was wrong, it says "18 out the end and 6 mounted radially".

Ahhhh, I forgot that your's is an '87. So, you don't know how much better those are vs the earlier ones.

As for the LED's, I may go with those if you say they are brighter. I'm confused with all the ones that Amazon has available, but there are so many duplicates it is hard to make comparisons. Thanks for the info.

I looked at that Royal Purple Synchromax at the auto store and it is expensive! Compared to other manual transmission oils, that is. But I also believe it will be worth it. I look forward to hearing if you observe that it quiets the tranny, improves shifting smoothness, etc.

I thought I'd be able to report on that today, but it took longer to get the gaskets than I'd planned so I used the time to take the front hubs and brakes apart. Glad I did because I found some problems, so it is going to take a few more days to get it back together.

Neat truck, cool swap! I scored a Windsor pattern ZF-5 speed out of a '97 2wd F250 for $125 that is going into my '86 F150 to replace a T-18. Looking forward to having that project done!

Thanks! Your swap will be much easier, but you will need the tall transmission inspection cover if you don't have it already. And, that price was a steal.

I know, right? I'd been looking for a couple years and had only been finding $500+ units. By inspection plate, do you mean the piece between the engine and trans? I have that, actually I went back and dropped another $150 and got the clutch, flywheel, starter, driveline, floor cover plate, hydraulics, crossmember...etc. So I'd hope I have what I need.

I meant what you called the floor cover. I think you have it all. And for only $300. Good job!

Ok, for the record I put the RP Synchromax in and I think it is the way to go. It reduced the noise of the transmission quite a bit and the shifting is somewhat better. So, I would recommend it to all ZF5 users, although it is pricey. And, smelly. But, it seems to work.

And, with that I've gotten everything I'm going to do re the tranny swap done. So, I'll say its a wrap, but will be happy to respond to anyone that comes along asking questions about swapping a ZF5 onto a 351M/400.

Wow!! Hadn't noticed. Maybe I'm oblivious to micro-analysis?

Ok then, just a brief summary. I have about 2000 miles on the ZF with no problems whatsoever with the spacer and anything associated with it. No vibrations even though I've spun it to 5K numerous times. No change in the starter's sound, and I did pull it at one point and there was no extra wear on the teeth of the starter nor flywheel. And the 11" clutch is handling things very well.

It was a lot of work, but I'm happy with the results. The reduced engine noise while cruising, the increase gas mileage, and the ability to cruise at any speed w/o spinning the engine rapidly make it worth the effort. And, I've always wanted a manual tranny in my truck!
