Good negotiating can get a new 6.7 for 45k. I paid 47k plus tax for my 2011 in August of 2011. (Sticker 58k)
I've seen a few of them under 40k now used. Still a lot more money than 20k and a truck that's gonna be driven 5k a year or something small probably doesn't justify the 40k spent.
I also see you are in CA. Keep in mind that diesels are emissions tested in CA and you will have to pass. Therefore, tuning the truck will mean having to put it back to stock every other year in order to pass inspection (this is if you buy a 6.4).

Couple Dumb facts from a newbie but
-My truck is a 06 6.0 CCSB I get 14mpg local driving
-Truck has 190k
-Paid 11k for it with 180k
-Talked to a guy at the pumps with a new 6.7 getting 18mpg local driving
-Truck has 15k
-Paid 50k for it with 0
I just don't see how it adds up to buy a brand new truck........ That is $10k per mpg!!!
This 6.0 has alot more s and get than my 7.3 had but also alot more possible issues All the reading I've done I would definitely stick with 06 and later 6.0 or go for the 6.7. For some reason the 6.4 didn't last very long and mileage sucked too.

It is not only more powerful engine with better mpg that buyers are looking for in new vehicles. It is flashing the neighbors with dealer stickers, fresh car smell and... . better cupholders.
Don't know how many SuperDuty buyers pay attention how many airbags are installed on it. My 10 years old VW had them 12.

What are you planning to use the truck for?
Anything newer than the 7.3 you will want to mod it. Will you be able to?
The 6.4 and 6.7 use the newer common rail system. The 6.7's are better stock than a stock 6.4. A modded 6.4 can be quite nice.
I've seen a few 6.0's get picked up for really cheap, studded, tuned, stripped of junk, and running great.
My 7.3 oil looked new when it got changed, my 6.4 looked like it had a million miles on the same oil, then after a tuner it looked really good at oil change time. EGR and regen destroys oil, and wears the entire engine out, IMHO. I would'nt buy anything diesel after the 7.3 if there wasn't a tuner available.

How does a tuner change oil color and viscosity? Is this what happened to your oil before the tuner? I understand how deleting the egr would keep the egt's down (save a diesel). Just don't know how the tuner helps oil preservation.
